I must admit that when I heard that Southmost native son Gerardo Martinez was running for the city commission At Large "A" position left vacant by Estela Chavez-Vasquez, I was intrigued by his candidacy.
After all, I grew up in the Southmost area and attended both Josephine CastaƱeda Migrant School and Cromack Elementary in the heart of the barrio.
Throw in his MIT engineering degree and you have – as his campaign slogan announces – "the right set of skills."
But after a closer look at his bona fides, disillusion gradually set in.
Martinez – before he had announced for office – had been working in the maquiladoras in Matamoros. Despite the mail out where he claims he works in Brownsville, clearly, he works in the Matamoros plants.
Martinez works for a maquiladora called called Avago Technologies with headquarters in Singapore and in San Jose, Calif. Avago is a high-tech electronic component manufacturing company that makes cell-phone and laser components and came to the U.S.-Mexico border to acquire cheap labor in Mexico and a ready market their products in the U.S. and the world.

People like Martinez – with their high-tech degrees – show them how to "increase efficiency and output," in other words, how to speed up the production line and gain maximum profits from these low-paid workers. A careful scrutiny of their corporate financial statement sheet shows that the Matamoros workers don't get retirement or other benefits the company grants to other foreign workers where they have similar plants. There is no Avago plant in Brownsville, although the company lists jobs in Matamoros as being in Brownsville.
In fact, according to CareerBliss, a senior engineer position at the Matamoros plant earns an average of $31,000 (47 percent) less than national average Senior Test Engineer salary ($81,000) and $41,000 (58 percent) less than average Avago Technologies salary ($91,000).

The very nature of maquiladoras – or in-bond plants – is to take well-paying manufacturing jobs from the United States and have cheap labor produce their products to later reintroduce them to the United States markets with little or no tariffs.
I have in my possession a mass mail out Martinez put out to the voters of the city where he tells of his labor history. There is never any mention of Avago, or that the plant is in Matamoros. Instead, he says that "For the last 15 years, I've worked in Brownsville with "a high-tech startup company where we make lasers for fiber optic communications."
Gerardo is a nice enough fellow, and we applaud his educational achievements. But we believe his approach is on the wrong side of the development curve that our area, our people, and out country need to get ahead in the future.

Glad you caught on, Juan.

"Neither of these sappy pretenders should have ever struck-out for public office. District 1 residents need Roman Perez like it needs English grammar books. District 2 needs Zarate like it needs yet another fat, Mexican guy. The Gods of Voting are about to show them the door. Yeah, this Saturday will be yet another resident spanking for Perez and Zarate's latest failure. Both wives of these clowns ought to bolt for the beach. Well, yeah, get a goddamned suntan for your troubles, sweethearts."
The pendejo Eduardo Paz Martinez knows more about aborigine herpes than the political landscape in Brownsville.....yes Maria, the old man is a real pendejo....trying to be significant in a world that has discarded the old relic.
He took on the grandfather of blogs...the pioneer Gerry McHale Scully....the man that is often imitated but never duplicated. It eats at the senior citizen putz that McHale and Montoya mean something in this crazy society.....but yet there he is...like a fly looking for a turd to land on...writing stupidities about everyone hoping to get attention.
The predictions on the Saturday elections are laughable. Sergio Zarate will defeat Tereau, and Roman Perez will be in the run-off against Rick Longoria...and Perez will prevail. The idiot Paz is the one that will be laughed at after the elections. McHale's candidates are going to pounce on the old putz's candidates.....and all his derogatory writings will prove worthless.....but keep it up drummer.....the people need a pendejo to laugh at.
This is another fake from the barrio stealing from the poor and his own community.
Roman Perez will announce he is a woman after he loses! ja ja ja ja
El pinche Bruce Jenner de Brownsville!
Shut the fuck up cris . ....and quit stealing taxpayers time ! Get off the blogs you speckled faced monkee !
