Guess who's fit to be tied over the removal of his brother's name from the marquee at Victoria Heights Elementary School?
If you ever had the chance to visit the school during elections (it's a voting site), you would have seen the name of a former Victorio Avila on a sign placed just below the school name. It is also the home of the Mighty Tigers.
We always wondered who it referred to, and it wasn't until former Pct. 2 constable (and JP candidate) Pete Avila told us it was his late brother, a principal who served there for years. Avila's brother has since passed away, but it was a source of pride to his family to pass by and see the memorial there to remind them of their family member.
In an old picture we were able to dig up, the memorial can be seen clearly that Avila worked there as principal from 1978 to 1997, almost 20 years.
His brother told us that Victorio was principal at Palm Grove Elementary and George Saenz was principal at Victoria when Saenz got in some trouble and was moved to Palm Grove and Avila to Victoria.
Imagine the surprise of Avila family members when they drove past the corner of 13th and Roosevelt and saw the sign painted over.
They can onbly hope that the new administration plans to replace the sign with a new one and that the job isn't finished.
Victoria heights Elementary is one of the district's oldest schools, opening its doors in 1926, just 11 years after the 1915 formation of the Brownsville Independent School District.
Apparently, the new principal, one M. Moreno, thought the sign honoring Avila was nothing special and had maintenance paint over it. Now Pete is making arrangements to speak with BISD superintendent Zendejas about its removal. If you think the Tigers are mad, wait until you see Pete.

I don't blame Pete. His brother Vic was a great dedicated Educator and a great person !
i attended Victoria Heights in the mid 1960's and i remember Ms. Cooper our PE coach who back then was trying to come up with a name for the school's mascot and i rememeber her having decided down to the wire on two which were the Lions or the Tigers, and they chose the tigers and then that's history. Shame they took Mr. Avila's name off that is wrong.
Hey, loco, former Channel 5 newscaster Jessie Degollado died Tuesday in a car accident. Channel 5 said she was driving her Ford Focus to a family gathering in Mexico when she was broadsided by a Mexican bus. U remember her?
I am a Tiger! Because of Mr. Avila I chose to become an educator. Mr. Avila was a great man.
I don't think....Carlos Elizondo is going to help you with getting your brothers name back on the school billboard sign, Pete Avila. Remember you pissed off Elizondo by screaming at him that you were going to make sure he didn't win his political race. Don't forget Carlos sits on the school board and he hates your sons at the fire department for being scabs.
Pete's boys are scabs in dept and they are really big ass kissers to chief Perez when there father hated him, remember when lenny was a lieutenant and he messed up royaly at the port and Pete called him a chicken without a head bola de mamones
Several generations of kid have gone through that school since 1997. The faculty and administration also has turned over. People have no idea who that guy was. Time marches on and sooner or later everything gets painted over.
If you are not on Mt. Rushmore or have a monument in DC you fame and honor is just a passing fad. No sense in getting your nose out of joint, because people forget about you.
There is a life lesson in all of this, but I will leave it to you folks to figure it all out.
