By Juan Montoya
Just this past weekend there was a coming out announcement by Silverio (Silver) Cisneros saying he will challenge Pct. 2 Constable Abel Gomez in the 2016 primary.
Attending the coming-out bash were none other than Cameron County Pct. 1 commissioner Sofia Benavides and District Attorney Luis V. Saenz.
Both these elected officials are facing reelection next year. Also, both see Gomez as a threat and are supporting Cisneros who they consider an ally of their reelections camp.
Who is this "Silver?"
Cisneros is the assistant to Horacio Barrera, the chief of the Cameron County Park Rangers. You remember Barrera. He lost for Pct. 1 constable to Republican Pete Delgadillo in an upset no one expected.
And so, when the political tides turned on Barrera, he tried the tried and true formula to bide his time patrolling the sand dunes of South Padre and Boca Chica with the Park Rangers until the political tides changed in their favor
It happened when Conrado Cantu beat Omar Lucio for Cameron County Sheriff. Gus Reyna, Lucio's Chief Deputy, needed a place to go.
Likewise, when Cantu was deposed, there was a place needed for his Chief Deputy Juan Mendoza to go. So off they went to the island parks.
But alas! This time there was none.
In fact, before his election defeat, Zamora had argued for the dissolution of the department and told Benavides that the department was no longer necessary since he could handle his constable position and if the court would just transfer the Ranger Dept. personnel over to him, he would guarantee their performance in patrolling Boca Chica and Padre Island, both in her precinct.
When he was constable, Zamor and Silverio and Ovidio Cisneros along with him as his lieutenants.
Now, why would two elected officials (Benavides and Saenz) get involved in the Pct. 2 constable race? We can understand Saenz coming out against Gomez because the current constable was seen as an ally of Carlos Masso, the Brownsville Port commissioner who gave the DA a run for his money four years ago.
And Benavides – who treasures loyalty – has several of Cisneros' relatives working in Pct. 1.
In fact, one of her worker's relatives – Ovidio Jr.? – was working for Gomez as a deputy constable but was let go after several unseemly transgressions that could not be overlooked. Ovidio Sr. at that time expressed his anger at Gomez for not overlooking his kids shortcomings and vowed to get even with the constable.
Now, we happen to know that former constable Pete Avila is also planning to run for the same position as Gomez and Cisneros. Avila and Gomez are indefatigable campaigners. If we were betting people here, we'd say that – despite the Cisneros clan's vaunted political prowess – it would come down to Gomez and Avila again.
Now, Saenz is looking hard for friends for his reelection after many feel he turned on them once he got into office. Aligning himself with Benavides (and the Cisneros) may be an alternative to recoup the support (and megapachangas) he got from the Lucino Rosenbaum camp in Southmost in the last election.
The question is: Why would Benvides get involved in the race that can only end up being a liability to her own reelection bid? Sometimes loyalty can ask for too much.

Politics makes for strange bedfellows and in Cameron County we find some very strange things in the Dumbokratic Party. And we see that these elected officials weave some strange webs when they hire relatives of friends and politicians who have had "transgressions" that caused them to lose their jobs, but not their influence on an election. Since the voter turnout is so low in Cameron County, candidates must attempt to manage and maintain the support of those who do vote....namely, their employees and their employee families. Who will run against Sofia....hopefully someone with a brain.
Mr. Montoya,
I have no political preference as to who wins, but I find it very ironic that you write a post about a candidate that is running against Mr. Gomez. Do you yourself have a favorite candidate here, being that you have a political ad on your page of Mr. Gomez. I understand this is your blog page, but id like to know how can any other candidate get an ad on here too. Do you get paid for this or do they have to be on your approval list?
Let them align. Will.be beautiful to see them all go down in flames together
juan heard the Sofie may not be running for re-election for pct 1 commissioner? any words or thoughts on that, that her daughter Esther might run in her place? any rrun rruns on that yet? cca
Throw-Back-Thursday Tricky Dick,
LOS CISNEROS SON UNA BOLA DE MAMONES TIENEN TRABAJANDO A TODA LA FAMILIA EN EL CONDADO HERMANOS HIJOS CUNADOS SOBRINOS LA CULPA LA TIENE LA SOFIA POR PERMITIR ESO
Commissioner Sofia Benavides is running for re-election. Your right Juan, she is very loyal and honest to all her constituents. She's done a lot in her precinct and will continue to work hard for her people.
Cisneros you have my vote as well. I'll never forget the time you and the other beach officers busted that idiot selling and giving pills to kids including mine ! My eldest still talks about that day and never forgets that the "gordito" beach officer told him and the girls not to give up on their goals no matter where we come from or how poor we were. Long story short she's looking forward to finishing school and becoming an officer. Thank you Mr Cisneros you guys are an inspiration to the youth. Count on my and all the Ledezma family's vote!!
The Cisneros are the ones thst worked security at that club Ranas. Even Zamora was frequently seen there with his right and left hand cisneros watching his back. And the ovidio guy is the one who talks to people in the island like he is a Judicial. Some of them treated people mean. They didn't care if it was kids, women, or man. But if it is someone from the ranch they come from they work together. We going to have to go with Mr. Avila cuz people know that gomez uses and the Cisneros relatives sells drugs. No more conrados. Vamos con Sr. Avila.
Sofia is there because the Cisneros are her "street walkers". In return they get cushy jobs with county. You could see them all at Perkins harvesting votes. They also worked for Ernie Hernandez. Was he at the pachanga or was he not invited. Young cisneros already turning from the hand that fed his own, where is the loyalty? This is going to be interesting. Gomez, get ready for a real fight. It's gonna hit the fan.
Commissioner has a Convicted DWI Felon working in her precinct driving county vehicle A.G. is stil on probation that's just for starters
Some people are just born to serve and protect. Last year an ex park ranger doniaz cisneros risked his own life to rescue a man from a burning car in the middle of the expressway. Im sure every family has skeletons in their closets and nobody is perfect. We need to focus on the good deeds people do.... people if you're breaking the law don't expect officers to say please and thank you...
TEAM CISNEROS!!!!!!
Talking firm to people is one thing, but humiliating them in front of their wife, kids, mothers, is what these Team Cisneros did. The one that all of us learned to call Woody, was the worse, ask beach goers ever one knew Woody, if you would put him in his place, all the rest of Team Cisneros would come to the backup or rescue. Imagine them with the power of constables. It will not be good.
If this guys work the beach, How about that tall, black or dark guy that works security on A golf cart at islsnd. I witnessed him just out right bullying my uncle. My uncle could not forgive himself for allowing this young man bully him in front of us. My uncle is black belt and has skills, size was not issue, my uncle backed down for my grandmother and us. But my uncle was very ashamed of how he was treated. He did not say a word for hours quiet all the way home. When grandma asked him what was wrong he just shake his head. My dad explained to us why he felt like that. He was embarrassed of how he was treated in front of us. We don't like going to the beach much anymore, if we go we avoid the areas where this guy works.
Everyone knows Abel uses. Y Pete que anda haciendo sin su provoder alv! Pinche viejio se caga parado. Son una bola de ratas todos.
I have personally dealt with both Ovidio and Silver because of my work. I will tell you that they are night and day and should not be compared. Silver is a courteous and well mannered police officer who tries to help people out as much as he can. I think it's unfair to him to be compared to everybody else. I have coworkers also and think that I shouldn't be judged by what they do. Only one comment talks directly about Silver and it is saying what a good job he did. Silver you have my vote!
I don't know if they are day and night. My dealing with both have been positive. Different yes but only on how they work with people who break law. It has been my experience that everyone works the way it works for them. You will not find store clerks, judges, mechanics, waiters, officers, maids, cooks, lawn workers, carpenters, or car washers that work or act the same. All of us have our own way of acting. Stop wasting your time, Silver is going to win because he is a good person and because he wants to serve. No one has mention anything wrong or bad about Silver Cisneros. How I see it is that he is a positive influence to his rest of family that have followed his path to law enforcement. Once the others get the job, they make their own decisions on how they want to work. We need positive role models as our leaders. Like lady above mentioned that he impacted her young daughter when he spoke to her about goals, well that sounds to me as a good person. We are going to vote for Cisneros vs Gomez, not the fsmily. What or who is the candidate is what is of most importance here, not what he or she said. Mr Montoya, be neutral please and fair and allow this two young men run and the best man will win. Post all comments because the public want to say their believes. I wish cisneros a good campain, Ms Benavidez, Mr Zamora, Mr Saenz must see that the man is a good person, that is why they back him up.
