CTY. CT. AT-LAW STAFF: WHAT'S GOOD FOR THE GOOSE...

By Juan Montoya
Barely a week after the Cameron County Commissioners Court gave a 10 percent race to about 17 district court staff members, they approved a request for a similar race for the seven staff members of the three county courts-at-law.
And even as commissioners David Garza and Alex Dominguez on Thursday voiced their reluctance to give the raises outside the budget process, the court majority approved the raises that would another seven court employees what amounts to about a $4,000 raise each.
After the district court staff raises passed, the commissioners court was besieged by various department head including the district clerk, county clerk, and even the sheriff's department.
"After the district court staff got the raise, that opened the flood gates for the others to come in and try to get raises for their staffs," said a court observer.
"Now the commissioners are going to be under the gun to the rest of the county employees when they ask for a raise during the budget process," he said.
The county commissioners last year gave employees a $1,000 one-time stipend. Employees in the Public Works department said that after the new property appraisals came in, that swallowed up the stipend.
"One hand gives it and the other takes it away," said one. "Spread over a year, that amounts to less that $20 a week. "We will see what the commissioners do when we ask for a raise.

Of course it would be the goddamn judges and their staff to break the rules and twist arms for money outside of the budget process. Who sees a deficit coming? The taxpayers miss you, Carlos Cascos.

Carlos got a big fat-ass raise when he went over the hill to the blessed right-wing Republican's.

The county Judge is a weakling, he should have put a stop to all this non-sense. Instead he caved in. Look, every county employee deserves a raise, a 3% across the board would have been okay, instead of a 10% to court staff employees.

The Mexican community here, more than any other, is unwilling to look in the mirror and acknowledge any fault. Critics are entirely correct to focus on Fatherhood when talking to Hispanic audiences... how can anyone dispute this when 70% of Mexican children born in this county are born out of wedlock. What the Hispanic community needs more than anything is a strong leader who is willing to speak the truth, and not pander to those who want to perpetually view Mexicans as victims.
