I didn't know what to think when I read Harlingen's Christopher brush's letter to the editor of the Brownsville Herald defending the Confederacy.
In particular, Brush defended the symbolism and motive behind what he claims is the Christianity and martyrdom behind the rebel battle flag. For that matter, Brush says that all symbolism associated with the confederacy is a treasured legacy of the South based upon the highest moral and civilized principles of not only the South, but of the entire country as well.
At first I was agog to think that anyone in our times would defend southern ideology on Christian principles. Then I was angry that someone could actually believe what they were writing and that they expected the rest of us to even consider adhering to that line of thought.
Then I got pissed.
What Brush advance, in a nutshell, said was that the rebel battle flag originated with the Christian martyrdom of Andre, Simon (Peter's) brother, who was killed by the Romans in Greece for preaching His word. Andrew chafed at the bit at being a vassal of the Roman empire and its idolatry. The progression, says, went on to Scottish King Angus in his struggle against the Northumbrians, a precursor to the English nation. Angus, apparently, chafed under the bit at at being a vassal to a superior English king.
That's the standard, Brush says, which led the Cross of Andrew (saltire) being adopted as the battle banner for the Army of Norther Virginia and the other Confederacy armies when they waged a civil war against the Union.
The logic (or illogic) Brush advances is that the southern states were merely defending the most "treasured ideas of the U.S. Constitution and the authors of the Constitution. "it represents individual from tyranny of a centralized government, the exact things the Constitution says was supposed keep America free from.
"The Texans before us found it worthy to make the ultimate sacrifice for it. Don't we owe it to them?," he asks.
Let me be blunt.
The battle flag of the Confederate armies was a symbol of the people in a region which had – as a spiritual foundation of its economic base – the tacit acceptance of all good southern whites that they were superior to their black bothers. As such, they felt free to enslave them, to treat human beings as property, and to maintain them in a position of subservience and servitude.
Under the guise of a civilized (and self-serving) Christian dogma, they justified justify tearing a crying child from his weeping mother's bosom at a slave auction, flogging a salve who chafed under the bit (like Andrew and Angus), and keeping an entire people in a tenuous economic and social state that was dependent on the slaveowners' goodwill on pain of death.
You cannot sugar-coat slavery. In fact, the introduction of sugar cane to the plantations of the New World, and later, Louisiana, was only possible because black slave labor made it economically feasible. Slavery was the precursor of modern-day outsourcing to use slave labor to make your products competitive with your adversaries.
This is not a legacy, an image, or a heritage what we should glorify or emulate. What is there to honor about men who died in battle defending their (erroneous, it turns out)) God-given right to enslave their brethren? Does that sound like a worthy Christian ideal to you? Should we adore the standard they took with them to their most-deserved and appropriate defeat?
"Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth," the Good Word says in Exodus.
And the rebel battle flag is just that, a graven image that is based upon one of the most foul, most vile, systems ever devised by men to foist upon their fellow men. To hold it as a badge of honor is to spit upon the graves of those men whose lives were taken by these wayward renegades who called themselves the Confederate States of America.
As I said, before, first surprise, then anger, then revulsion. Let's try charity now.
There are many things we admire in Southern culture. It's hard to find a more hospitable, genteel, hardworking, church-going folk. They share their homes, their food and wherewithal without thinking twice. And the region's ability to rise materially above its defeat is a lesson in basic survival.
But not all that existed in the past is worth retaining. There is no longer any south or north. There are blacks, whites, reds, browns and yellows. There's just all of U..S.
Mr. Brush: Don't remain a slave to the past because the rest of us have to live with you in the present.
Que batalla con ustedes!

Morons like Christopher Brush are so insecure that nothing can get them straight. Likely an old white guy. Loser. But they die soon enough.
Well said, Juan
Being a 3rd generation Texan (U.S. Citizen), I remember my sport events in the late 40's and 50's. Some of the "gringo" kids brought the Cofederate flag to taunt us and yelling "Remember the Alamo and Goliadth". We paid no attention to their diatribes. We knew what that flat flag represented; an ideology of Slavery. Oppression. Ignorance, 3rd Reich mentality, Misery, . Secession, etc. Texas was "admitted " to the Union to be a Slave state. Many Tejanos are decendents of the Mier-- Camargo of the 1700's who developed the livestock, vaquero. Farming and ranching in South Texas. A great number of these were Sephardic Spanish Jews , Mestizos, and Mexican families. My point is at least we now who we are !
Oh well, the La Raza Mexicans hate gringos and their history no matter what period. Therefore this latest rant is just one more of many. No reason to take it seriously. If it is not their history, then "peese" on it, is their mantra.
Same ol, same ol....
Let me see if I have this right. Juan is telling somebody named Brush not to live in the past. Is that right?
This coming from a guy who is still pissed about the Anglo invader who drifted across the Sabine river to take advantage of the poor ignorant Mexicans and steal their land.
This coming from the guy who is still pissed at Stillman, King, Kenedy and their lack Yturria.
This coming from the guy who loves to blast "Stillman's Love Shack" at every turn.
Jeeze, what a mealy mouth hyprocrite!
I do not agree with "Mr. Brush's"letter, but when comments such as "gringo", are used it takes away from your statement. We don't have to call people names to get our point across. Just because people discriminate against us doesn't mean we have to do the same thing. Articles in this blog use words such as, gay, blimp, gordo, fat and other derogatory choice of words. ( to name a few ) Just like Mr.Brush's flag has a history of bigotry and hate, comments other responders to this site do so, as well. Let's also respect , choice of who you love, and what your body looks like .The Confederate flag hurt a lot of people, but so does modern day discrimination. So much suicide amongst young people, because of not being accepted and hatred. Peace
Yes, you are sooooooooo right! But now we need to go after the Confederate national flag, which is displayed at Texas tourist centers, such as the one in Harlingen. No one but the ignorant rednecks, such as the one you roasted in your column, would know that tri-color flag with a circle of stars was the national flag of the disgusting Confederacy.
But, while we are at it, of those flags that flew over Texas displayed at the centers, there is the flag of the Spanish monarchy. Those SOBs slaughtered millions of the indigenous in Mexico, enslaved Indians and allowed their dirty germs to take an awful toll. Those guys called "conquistadores" were real bastards, even worse than the evil Confederates.
They even raped the Indian maidens, creating a half-breed bunch called "mestizos." Take down the damned Spanish flag! Burn it! Besmirch it!
And we should not forget the Mexican flag, representative of a country run by "ricos" who have held the people of Mexico in subjection for generations. So much so that there has been a virtual stampede of Mexicans trying to get out of that infernal place! Then, too, the idiotitos in control in Mexico can't even protect their own people, witness the 100,000 or more who have fallen in the drug wars in the past few years. The Mexican flag offends the hell out of me! Take that symbol of rape, oppression and corruption down! Take it down, by God! Take that rag down and burn it! To hell with those who oppress poor Mexicanos!
There is also flying at the tourist center in Harlingen a flag bedecked with fleur de lis, symbolic of the French monarchy that lorded it over the French peasantry for centuries, until the French wised up and put those guillotines to work. But that damned flag should go, too! And let's get those guillotines out of cold storage! Any of these old Confederates, Spaniards, chilangos and frogs still around? Off with their heads! We don't want any trace of their mangey old history left to contaminate our brave new world, by God!
We should all learn from history's mistakes and not continue to hate. Let's focus on addressing modern day bigotry and discrimination. Social media attacks make modern day hate more brutal. We can't help what our ancestors did, and we couldn't choose what race we were born into. Regardless of what our race is, we can't claim to like everyone of our own race. Heck I don't, some are not nice people. Nice people come in all races, just like not so nice people, as well.
According to science we all go back to Java-man and Cromagnon. This can be proven quiet easily. When you go to your Coffee shop in the mornings, just observe that many of the patrons do resemble the Javes. Many of my coffee comrades share the same features. Lookin in the mirror , I look like the Peking-Man.
You fools.!!! Don't you realize we are descendants of Adam and Eve. When they were run out of Paradise they were now wearing banana leafs as clothing ; they were carrying the Confederate flag with them. Don't you ignoramus read your history ?
