1,000 SURVEYS CAN'T BE WRONG: WE BE STILL AT DA BOTTOM

NO. 1 POOREST: BROWNSVILLE-HARLINGEN, TEXAS
> Median household income: $32,093
> Median home value: $76,200
> Unemployment rate: 6.8%
> Poverty rate: 35.2%
(The typical Brownsville-Harlingen, Texas household earns just $32,093 a year, or $21,564 less than the typical American household. The city is by several measures the poorest in the country. More than 35% of area residents live in poverty, the highest poverty rate in the country. Low incomes in the area may be the result of a poorly educated workforce. Just 64.6% of Brownsville area adults have at least a high school diploma, 22.3 percentage points fewer than the national figure. About 29% of area households rely on food stamps, the third highest share of any metro area in the country.

The area is known locally for its colonias — communities the government formed in the 1950s on worthless agricultural land. There are roughly 2,300 of these neighborhoods in Texas, mostly located along the Mexican border.)

By MSN-Money
U.S. median household income increased in 2014 to $53,657, an increase of roughly $600 from the previous year. Still, U.S. incomes have yet to recover to pre-recession levels. Adjusting for inflation, U.S. 2014 median income was still below its 2009 level.
Periods of recession and economic boom have an impact on the overall wealth of a country, as well as on metropolitan areas — although to varying degrees. In most cases, the impact does not change the relative wealth of a metropolitan area, especially of the most affluent and extremely impoverished metropolitan areas.
People living in Brownsville-Harlingen, Texas, where the typical household earns $32,093 a year, likely have a considerably different life from those living in San Jose, California, where the median household income is approximately three times that of Brownsville’s. 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the wealthiest and poorest cities in the U.S.
Income and poverty levels, although not always perfectly correlated, are closely related. The federal poverty threshold — $11,770 for a single individual — is based on the income necessary to sustain a household, and depends on the age of the home owner, the family size, and the number of children. As a result, poverty tends to be more prevalent in places with exceptionally low incomes.
Notably, the poverty rates in all 25 poorest metro areas exceeds the national poverty rate of 15.5%. More than 35% of residents in Brownsville-Harlingen, for example, live in poverty, the highest poverty rate nationwide.
An area’s labor market can be a significant factor in determining incomes. A lower unemployment rate is often a sign of a healthy, competitive job market. Not only are more people employed, but also workers are more likely to be better paid. In addition, the more occupants in a household who are able to bring in income, the higher that region’s wealth will be. Of the 25 wealthiest metropolitan areas, the unemployment rates in 19 are equal to or lower than the national rate. All but one of the 25 poorest areas have higher than average jobless rates.
In an interview with 24/7 Wall St. Charles Varner, associate director at Stanford University’s Center on Poverty and Inequality, explained that while employment is an important component in determining the affluence of a given area, how people are employed is likely just as important. In many of the country’s wealthiest metro areas, Varner observed, a high share of employees work technology and finance positions. Indeed, in the majority of the high-wealth metro areas — such as the Washington D.C. region, the San Francisco Bay Area, and San Jose — a very high share of workers are employed in professional and scientific positions, which tend to pay better than many other industries.

Our alphabet soup of economic developers like IMAGINE BROWNSVILLE, GBIC, BEDC, BND, BPUB, CofC, BVCB, etc, etc, etc, will save us. What do those high paid execs do all day ?

Juan, you should call out Valley Interfaith to do something to help our poor people. Like demand accountability from our elected politicians who run these self serving organizations. What's wrong with them at least pushing for a voter's registration drive in our biggest neighborhood, Southmost ? Not only our biggest, but most neglected.

Whatever happened to Valley Interfaith anyway? Do they still exist?

The Republican parts of the state are hugely successful and us in Democrat South Texas still suck. Maybe we should reevaluate this blind Democratic support thing. All it has brought us is corruption and extreme poverty. Viva el partido Democrata!

Turn the valley back over to mexico. It cost the rest of the USA to much money in welfare and hand outs. Nothing at all to offer the rest of the country. Nothing but uneducated welfare tit sucking narcos. You are disgusting corrupt people. So much part of your Mexican culture that you find your behavior normal.

And yet our own elected officials take every opportunity to pick the public pockets and support political corruption. Our elected officials are much like the cartel leadership...."when one asshole at the top falls, another asshole pops up to take his place". Political corruption is a crime and the Democratic Party of Cameron County supports political corruption.

Typical Brownsville's household $32,093, yea right, that would be $617.00 per week or 40hours @ $16.00 an hour, there is not to many job at that rate here in Brownsville, I think Brownsville is a lot poorer

The Government did not form the colonias, that was done by unscrupulous developers, some who still live here, but within the laws at the time. Laws have changed and such developments can no longer be built. on another note, nice picture of Kopernic Shores, now sometimes called Boca Chica Village, which was developed in the late 60s by one of those unscrupulous developers from Chicago, but actually when he did the development there was water for the residents that was supplied by a water treatment plant, unfortunately the water treatment facility went belly up, and now the County, for a fee, delivers household use water to each home's storage tank but not drinking water, the residents have to tote it from Brownsville.

Maybe $32,093 per year is possible here. If the wife also works full time. But at what cost ? Who's home taking care of the kids ? Tia's are great, and certainly great back up. But they are no substitute for mama. No one loves a kid more than their mama, (that means cleaning up their diarrhea quickly, and their little ass's, maybe reading to them, or just entertaining them in general). Intelligent parents know that no one loves a kid like their mama.

I think anon at 10:25 PM is right. $32,093 cannot be right for B'ville. It has to be much less. Brownsville is a lot poorer than that. I guess whoever came up with that figure has never been to mi querido barrio Southmost.

Ahhh but Jessica Tetreau has a Telsa car. A 100,000 car from Elon Musk and she acquired all this wealth as soon as she became commissioner. I'm just saying. Some people just become rich over night in Brownsville, TX. Yearly trips to Disney, New House, New Cars, New Shoes, New Purses. Must be nice to be able to do these by washing cars. Of course before she became an over night Richie rich she would post that she would buy clothe at the second hand store because her husband wouldn't give her money. Wink Wink

Watergate was 43 years ago in 1972. The Democratic Corruption in Cameron County is today, yesterday, last week, last month, and consistently for the last few years. You have Judge Lima's Democrat, Sheriff Cantu Democrat, DA Villalobos Democrat, State Rep. Solis Democrat and the list goes on. The palanka is working great, Congratulations. Vote Democrat!!!
