We received a few calls regarding a health episode with a worker at the Starbucks Cafe on Ruben Torres Blvd. and withheld posting anything about it because we figured it might just be a disgruntled customer bellyaching about the staff.
But as the week wore on, we began to hear more versions of the same episode and came to the conclusion that there was some fire to the smoking coffee beans..
From what we have pieced together, it was last Saturday when customers having their favorite caffeine concoction were alarmed when one of the veteran staff persons there – apparently named Pater Hackett – stumbled out of the inside of the shop, gasped for air, and then collapsed on the ground.
"We saw him turning red and complaining that he couldn't breath and we moved out of his way to give him some room," said one of the customers there that day. "Someone called the ambulance to give him assistance and he laud on the ground for a while before they got there and took him to the hospital for treatment."
What angered some of the customers – including the source quoted above 6 was that no one from management came out to assist the staff worker. They said that manager Jessica Labato instead sent for one other worker to take over for Hackett's shift.
"Peter was one of the original workers at Starbucks," said another customer. "He has been a loyal employee since the cafe opened. There was no compassion shown on the part of management."
On Wednesday, customers saw a building mold-treatment company crew inspecting the building and deduced that perhaps Hackett's breathing problems may have been related to some mold issue.
No one knows what the eventual outcome might be in the end, but the cold treatment of Hackett by management left a bitter taste in customers' mouths.

Didn't a Starbucks next to Vermillion close down for mold? Is there something to connect the two???
Don't they just ship employees in long plastic tubes along with the cups and creamer?
I've noticed that the new manager is very unwelcoming and different than the previous manager. In the mornings she's always yelling at the workers.
He should hire the blimp and and mandamus them.
(He should hire the blimp and and mandamus them.)
He'd probly jump at the chance. What with free food and beverages. He'd double his size the first week.
Dags.
Your article is full of incorrect information. If you do not work at Starbucks you do not understand our procedures for handling these or other situations. Please do not disrespect our partners like this. We care greatly for our customers and partners.
DON'T FUCK WITH STARBUCKS, JUAN!
Those who "need" Starbucks are vain and self-promoters. Just give me regular coffee....just black coffee.
Seriously, an employee of Starbucks in commenting here and stating that what they did when ignoring their co-worker was because they followed the Starbucks' employee protocol.
That is it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am tearing up my Starbucks card and removing the app off my phone. I was just about to reload my card. But NOW, NO WAY. NO STARBUCKS FOR ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Says the haughty and incompetent manager....
ugly bitter coffee anyway not drink it.
puro folgers in my cup
Starbucks tiene que enterder que la accion de su gerrnte esta equivocada. Fue inhumana
Wow protocol is to ignore the health of your employees. I'm was there that night and all of this seems pretty accurate, except the mold part, they had a health inspection. I frequent Starbucks often and all the employees are amazing except this new manager. It's a horrible situation and I hope that employee is doing OK.
Go Mr. Geeks!!!!!!! by the University (whatever it's called now).
Great place.
Sure YOU Care....ha..ha
puro dunkin donuts alv
Pete is an excellent partner. This is a terrible incident. Hope he is doing well
I hope that Starbucks as a company really takes action. Real action. It's unfair to be willing to risk the entire crew over one incompetent manager. Honestly this new manager is a liability to the company; I hope nothing too extreme happens that could lead Starbucks to a lawsuit. All because the extreme carelessness of the manager.
We're completely forgetting that she comes in "high" to work. Seriously.
Shame on you Starbucks
The employee's illness may be a result of diacetyl exposure. It causes permanent damage to lungs in people who inhale it. Starbucks Corporate has refused to speak publicly in response to questions about employee safety.
OSHA doesn't have regulatory authority at this time. Oddly enough, they have stopped looking at safety issues in the coffee industry (where problems are known to occur.)
At each Starbucks store, an employee grinds coffee roughly every 8 minutes until noon and every half hour thereafter. That's when diacetyl is inhaled in coffee shops. In roasting houses it is likely more prevalent.
