SUDDENLY, THERE'S A WOMAN IN COUNTY JUDGE'S RACE

By Juan Montoya
In the usual political contest in Cameron County, two male candidates duking it out for the Democratic Party nomination to the county judge's election in March would seem to be a 50-50 split.
Sure, there are some positives and negatives to both guys' candidacies. But when you throw in the gender difference into a race, the formula is skewered.
Women (and we guys know this) tend to favor their kind. So, for that matter, do ethnicities and special-interest groups.
We were thinking about this after one of our five readers emailed us from La Cantera last night that county judge candidate Elizabeth Garza had a pretty good turnout at her bash. We don't know the lady, but according to our source, she is articulate and well-versed on the issues. She is also very skeptical about the coming of the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminals proposed by multinational coprporations for the Port of Brownsville.
Whether you're for the LNGs or not is besides the point. The fact that a woman not clearly aligned with the political powers-that-be is throwing her bonnet into the ring is enough to garner our respect.
Pct. 4 holdover commissioner Dan Sanchez has his (albeit crumbling) stronghold in the northwest corner of the county. He has been elected twice to that position, the last time in November 2014, but everyone within earshot had heard him whisper that he really coveted the seat that is occupied by appointed judge Pete Sepulveda.
Sepulveda allowed Sanchez to resign and carry him into the March 1 primary drawing his salary and bully pulpit as  a"holdover" and didn't appoint anyone to replace him.
Former Brownsville Mayor Eddie TreviƱo has been out of the political arena for some time ensconced in the legal boardrooms of the Brownsville Public Utilities Board. He and his partner Conrad Bodden have made a pretty good living off of that municipal entity as well as from the City of Brownsville. Clearly, the Brownsville "establishment" is backing the former mayor.
He did, however, lose in the primary race for county judge against John Wood last time.
But in what might have been characterized as a spitting contest between two Demo alpha males, here comes Liz.
Statistics alone tell us that a female candidate will make a difference, but which male candidate will be most affected by her candidacy?
If aesthetics alone is used a gauge, Sanchez would bite the dust. We understand that the woman has brains and beauty, so Eddie can't take his male sex appeal or gray matter for granted.
It's always good for the voters to have a choice, and in this race where the choices had been limited, another candidate is probably good for the democratic process. The more the merrier, we say!

Oh, but she is clearly aligned, and with none other than Ernie Hernandez's daughter Erin. That means Ernie has her ear also.

Right, and yet you vote for all the men in office of which ALL have or are cheating on their spouses. Typical machismo bullshit in Brownsville.

If we are not to vote for someone because of who they went to college with or they happen to be colleagues with in their chosen profession, we would not have voted for all the people currently in office. Many of who have direct ties to such unscrupulous players in this county past and present.

I am voting for Elizabeth Valdez-Garza. I would not support her campaign if there were any actual ties to the family mentioned in your posts. The only "Clean Candidate" is Liz.

Additionally, anyone who slanders a candidates spouse without having the ump to sign their name has no credibility and appears to be just spouting nasty rumors because they were never taught "if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing".

Liz is genuinely a good person. If you want the same crapola, then don't vote for Liz. But if you have a sense of decency, right from wrong and want the county to reflect that mentality of integrity, ethics and progress...Vote for Liz.

I was going to vote for her, until this. Birds of a feather? If true, definitely do NOT count on my vote. Why is every DA candidate except the republican knee deep in corruption.

She is a terrible attorney.Very greedy and unethical. Always filing documents late, missing court appearances, and giving wrong legal advice.

She sucks as an attorney. Claims to be an immigration attorney but seems to know nothing. She intimidates her clients to keep ripping them off.

I was impressed with her website until I met the unprepared, ill mannered and unprofessional Valdez. Some people should not go to lawschool who are in it for just the politics and money. We are unhappy with how she has handled a child custody case. Then she runs for office, loses and endorses Dan Sanchez. I lost the respect I had for Dan if he works with people like Liz. She is disappointing as an attorney.
