A FIREFIGHTER AT THE PEAK OF HIS CAREER

(Ed.'s Note: One of our seven readers was kind enough to send us this striking photograph of a Brownsville Fire Dept hook-and-ladder (?) performing some sort of service on the city's venerable Market Square cupola. We tried to call the Central Fire Station to tell us what specific task they were performing but the number listed for the Central station (546-4674) is not answered on weekends. We thought about calling 911, but resisted the temptation since it is a number only for use in emergencies. It is a novel way to inspect the top of the dome since we know of no other way other than to put a ladder on the roof below and climb from there. Safety wise, however, it would be a precarious perch. We wouldn't do it! If anyone with the tragalumbres knows the score, please post a comment and enlighten the rest of us. Thanks for taking the time to send us the great photo.)

The fire department is always dependable to lend a hand or ladder where needed. It looks like he is taking photographs of tiling on top of cupola. A view of the interior would reveal cracks wide enough to let light shine through. It will be repaired. That is one the city's things to do list. Nice photo!
