Today, the state Republican Party and the Texas Secretary of State decided that the votes of 3,395 Republican voters in Cameron County do not matter.
Just as the Cameron County Republican Party got ready to pick places on the ballot, Chambers got word that the party and the SOS had ruled that his name would not appear on the ballot.Instead, runner-up Victor Cortez and the third vote getter, Robert Rodriguez, will face off in the runoff May 24.
Chambers beat Cortez 3,395 votes to 2,662, a 733 vote difference.
Rodriguez, who tallied 2,365votes, will instead appear on the ballot with Cortez.
Cortez came in second to the former Indian Lake Police Chief even after Cortez played an active role in having Chambers indicted and convicted of tampering with government documents over firearm certifications of his police force.Cortez was chief of the Public Integrity Unit of the Cameron County District Attorney's Office under Luis V. Saenz when several investigations were initiated against the police chief.
And when Chambers went to trial, Cortez was seen huddled close to DA investigators and Ass. DAs assisting them with his prosecution even as he campaigned against him for the GOP nomination for sheriff.
In fact, the timing of the Chambers trial seemed suspicious since it ended on January 18, just a month before the beginning of early voting in the primaries that started February 16-26.
Apparently, both the Texas republican party and Carlos Cascos, the SOS, thought that Chambers' appeal to those convictions would take too long and could stretch past the May 24 runoff date and perhaps past the November general election when either Chambers or Cortez would face incumbent Omar Lucio who easily won the Democratic Party primary.

This stinks! FWIW I generally don't vote Republican, nor planned to vote for Mr. Chambers. But, he's been given a raw deal. First, convicted by some sort of Kangaroo Court, then denied a place on the ballot - after the fact. He came in first, but who gives a F--- about the choice of the people. The Republicans are starting to eat their own, first nationally, now locally. There is nothing democratic (and that's with a small 'd' folks), about ignoring election results. I wonder what the great Constitutionalist "small government" advocate so-called "freedom-loving" Ted Cruz would say about these shenanigans.

Finally the SOS Cascos steps up to enforce and do the right thing. John Chamber's has mislead and misinformed his supporters. He cannot be sheriff with that conviction. An appeal can take years and it's not a gaurenteed an aquital. Unfortunately his supporters didn't bother to research. Ashame on you Chambers.

Cameron County, and in particular the City of Brownsville, have been constantly pummeled and plagued with corruption, compadrismo, and an “every man (or woman) for him/herself” mentality. NOT every Cameron County politician follows that approach but many who have become comfortable in their positions do. Is it a wonder we have a full time FBI staff dedicated to weeding through the county corruption? My intention has always been and will be to do right for every citizen and resident, man woman and child of our community. The people of this county deserve leadership that is honest and fair. They deserve a leader who cares more about the people he serves rather than himself. I know I am qualified and prepared to help bring HONESTY, FAIRNESS and TRANSPARENCY and proper MANAGEMENT to the Cameron County Office of Tax Assessor Collector. Chambers, due to his conviction, is unqualified to hold office. The SOS and party had no choice once he was convicted. Following his conviction Chambers claimed he was still eligible because his case was pending an appeal and hence his conviction was not final. He either is a liar or has poor legal representation. Once he was pronounced guilty his conviction was final. It is his appeal that is not final. It is a separate matter. As just or as unjust as it is, he has been convicted and it has nothing to do with discounting the voters of Cameron County. Just because you don't like the rules doesn't mean they don't apply

Actually he can run, Morgan specifically asked for permission to take him off because she believed he couldn't become sheriff. News flas he isn't on probation. He didn't take a plea bargain. When he is found not guilty in his appeal that is what it will read. Not guilty case dismissed. It will be like none of this ever happened. Will you see it in the papers or on tv? FINAL FELONY CONVICTIONS
Please also consider the following information before you challenge an application on the grounds of felony conviction:
A conviction on appeal is not considered a final felony conviction.
"Deferred adjudication" is not considered a final felony conviction. Article 42.12, Section 5, Texas Code of Criminal Procedure.
Mere prosecution, indictment or other criminal procedures leading up to, but not yet resulting in the final conviction, are not final felony convictions.
OTHER ISSUES
The requirements for voting and candidacy are often confused. Under Texas law, the rules are different for voting and candidacy. Section 141.001 of the Texas Election Code generally provides that to be eligible to be a candidate for, or elected or appointed to, a public elective office, a person must have not been finally convicted of a felony from which the person has not been pardoned or otherwise released from the resulting disabilities. This means there is no automatic restoration of the right to be a candidate, as there is for voting purposes, after a full discharge. Absent a pardon, the candidate must have obtained a judicial release from his or her disabilities in order to run for any office to which this section applies.
Similarly, the requirements for voting and for serving on a jury are different. Section 62.102 of the Government Code provides that a person who has been finally convicted of a felony is not eligible to serve on a jury, and that right may not be automatically restored as it is for voters.

She DID receive it. From the SOS and a copy of your CONVICTION. Want the links to the parts Chambers is also not mentioning about how before the canvas if he is determined ineligible his name and votes are to be ignored and he doesn't go onto the runoff ballot?
