In the Democratic Party primary of 2014, former Cameron County Clerk Joe Rivera beat out three other candidates by drawing 7,269 votes from a total of 16,627 cast.
Rivera then went on to beat Ruben Peña for the party's nomination in a runoff.
On the Republican Party side, Carlos Cascos beat out Jimmy Dickens by out polling him and getting 2,485 of 3,723 cast.
Yet, in the 2014 general election that November, Cascos beat Rivera 21,141 to 18,172.
This comes to mind when observing the numbers racked up in this year's primary between the Democratic and Republican candidates for Cameron County District Attorney.
Preliminary results in those races indicates that incumbent DA Luis V. Saenz out-polled Carlos Masso 14,684 to 13,856, a scant difference of 792 votes of the 28,504 cast.
On the Republican side, Jeremy Sorelle, running unopposed, got 7,900 votes. Only 12,738 Republicans voted in the primary this year, but Sorelle's numbers may be explained by voters choosing not to vote where there is an unopposed candidate.
Ever since the advent of the Tony Garza-Carlos Cascos dominance of the county judge's position (Garza twice, Cascos three times), Cameron County has enjoyed a notoriety of cross-party voting that has Democratic Party candidates looking over their shoulder.
In the case of Garza, he came in on the perfect storm when voters had enough of former county judge Ray Ramon and cross over to vote for the new kid on the block, even if he was a Republican. This was the first time since Reconstruction that any Republican candidate, never mind cunty judge, had been elected in Cameron County despite their smaller number.
In Cascos' case, voter disapproval of former county judge Gilberto Hinojosa also led voters to darken the circle under the Republican candidate.
Voters, it seems, moved away from the old party of choice and opted for the new guys in town. And if you heard Sorrele during the primary, he spoke about existing corruption inside Saenz's DA Office.
This year there is no Republican candidate for county judge. But there will be one for DA.
Will Cascos, now Texas Secretary of State, cross over to the Democratic side and endorse the Democratic Party's nominee for Cameron County DA to run against his Republican Party's nominee?
Or will history repeat itself?

Luis Saenz will win hands down !!!! Comparing Rivera to anything but the dog that he is is inconceivable !!! Luis beats to a different drum the voter want him in Riveras case the voters did NOT want him his welcomed in this county has been overstayed !!! Rivera is the most corrupt , harresser , thug in this county
A great number of Saenz votes came from those of use who chose the "best of the 2 bad candidates". I will surely vote for anyone running against Saenz in the November election....sort of like will vote for anyone running against Hillary in the Fall. Saenz is not out of the woods yet! And, I will always vote against "Sasquatch" Sanchez: he can't even reach his ass with both hands....how can we expect him to be a leader.
HA Montoya! Luis Saenz won! So much for your attempt to push your buddy, Carlos Masso!
Now, CC voters! You need to vote Dan Sanchez as your county judge! Eddie Trevino is a "snake" and he will try to fuck all the females he can since he is divorced and we all know.
A VOTE FOR TREVIÑO IS A VOTE FOR BIGOTES
Give it up Juan. Luis won despite your daily bashing. Are you still getting paid to do this?
Trevino is a turd !! Like Hinojosa looking out for themselves not for the county !!! I will vote for Sanchez at least we know what kind of a bird in hand we have
Someone with the financial resources to initiate a "WRITE IN CANDIDATE" PLEASE speak up.
I cannot in good conscious vote for the lesser of the two evil morons: "Sanchez & Trevino".
I am willing to help your campaign.
Ya Basta
Luis better not get to confident. Jeremy knows your secrets and so does republican Guz. Most of the people in your office didn't vote Luis Saenz. He barely won and Jeremy may just pull it off. If enough people know who Luis really is then he will have a lot of Democrats switch over to vote on the General Elections. Luis didn't support the Democrats since he took office back on 2013 why should they support him now.
Brownsville Herald
Why Brownsville lags behind
PAT AHUMADA
Eddie Treviño’s ads read: “It’s Our Money — No Tax Breaks for LNG!” and “What Matters Most? A Safe & Healthy Family,” which sounds like the voice of reason and the candidate to lead us toward progress.
Let’s look at Eddie Treviño’s record, which shows him taking taxpayers’ money to pay for his health insurance, car allowance and other expenses in violation of City Charter. When exposed, taxpayers had to write it off.
I got elected mayor on June 16, 2012, but just before leaving office Eddie Treviño introduced the for-profit Imagine Brownsville/Carlos Marin plan, which cost taxpayers more than $1 million and he signed the terms of employment contract with City Manager Charlie Cabler with an effective date of June 12, 2007, that provideda raise to $153,000, which is now $220,000. The contract further provides a $600 monthly car allowance, health benefits and 230 days (6.6 months or $183,333) severance pay for an “at will” employee who is entitled to 30 days severance pay, as per Section 20 of the City Charter.
I guarantee you that would never happen under my watch.
I recall when Eddie Treviño was willing to sell PUB and supported subsidies at PUB that ended up costing rate payers $91 million through higher utility rates. Now, there is talk to undo the impact fees, which would be a huge mistake.
Both Mayor Tony Martinez and Eddie Treviño pushed the BPUB-Tenaska project that is not feasible, but has cost us millions. This project is like the “bridge to nowhere” at the Port of Brownsville costing taxpayers $21 million and no bridge.
With the help of Manny Vasquez, who enjoyed PUB travel and perks, Eddie Treviño sued to remove PUB board members for control and is now the PUB attorney.
The compadre system is alive and well, which prompted an open records request to see his billing records, which Eddie Treviño has to date refused to release.
The entitlement mindset of people like Eddie Treviño who are given preferential treatment are like vacuums eager to give away our assets, submit excessive bills, buy real estate at exorbitant prices, and enter into deals that benefit their compadres.
But, when it comes to people like me who try to do what is right, they go all out to ruin us, as the notorious case involving a vindictive police chief and the city manager’s office who pushed for my conviction after conveniently destroying evidencethat would have easily showed who took the $21,139 check, because we do not play ball with taxpayers’ money.
Although I was found not guilty and none of the allegations have resulted in a conviction, not even the most recent preposterous animal abuse complaint filed anonymously, they push hard to discredit the good by using the headlines to justify their hate, support and justify the almost worthless Casa de Nylon purchase for $2.3 million; the Tenaska project that produced higher utility rates and empty promises; the secret milking of PUB with what I suspect exorbitant attorney fees and expensive consultants like forprofit Imagine Brownsville that produce nothing, other than serve as a political base for the same who prey on taxpayers.
These same righteous citizens who hold their noses up in the air are the embodiment of bad government. They have no morals, prey on weak individuals who are not independent thinkers and sell themselves for a taco. They are easily manipulated to obtain sweetheart employment contracts or the outcome desired at taxpayer’s expense.
These people suck the life out of our city and county, which is why Brownsville lags behind other Valley cities.
None of us is perfect, but I assure you, had I done what Eddie Treviño or Tony Martinez have done, these righteous people would be clamoring fiduciary abuse, abuse of office and organized crime. I would be in prison.
Now you know why Brownsville lags behind McAllen and will continue to do so, because of individuals who support the downfall of our city and county.
Pat Ahumada is a former Brownsville mayor.
MY TURN
Why is Cascos and Saenz waving at each other? Or was this pic taken right before a high five? Are they about to get it on?
Can we write in Liz Garza?
Pat ...get over looser
CORRECTION: Pat Ahumada was elected on June 16, 2007 and Eddie Trevino signed the city manager contract on June 12, 2007, four days before Pat was elected. Eddie knew he was forcing future commissions to an illegal contract that goes against what the city charter states to be legal.
Grow up!
Nope
Trevino and Sanchez, which one is more crooked that the other? well we will see in November, los reyes del chorizo.
To March 4, 2016, 11:29
"LOOSER"?
DO YOU KNOW WHAT LOOSER MEANS?
A "looser" is a loser that does not know how to spell loser, you loser.
(ne of us is perfect, but I assure you, had I done what Eddie Treviño or Tony Martinez have done, these righteous people would be clamoring fiduciary abuse, abuse of office an)
