SAENZ GETS A CAKEWALK FOR NOVEMBER D.A. ELECTION

By Juan Montoya
Cameron County District Attorney (and Democratic Party primary winner for that post) Luis V. Saenz leads a charmed existence.
Right after we posted that his win over challenger Carlos Masso didn't men he had a clear road to a second consecutive term, we got a few emails telling us he just might have that with the departure of Jeremy Sorelle, the Republican Party candidate he would have to face in the November general election.
Sorelle ran unopposed in his party's primary.
Saenz out-polled Masso 14,684 to 13,856, a scant difference of 792 votes of the 28,504 cast.
On the Republican side, Sorelle, running unopposed, got 7,900 votes  of the 12,738 cast in that party's primary.
We have confirmed with Cameron County Republican Party chair Morgan Graham that Sorelle, indeed, is out of the November election.
"He is out," she texted us.
Graham said she is currently researching whether the party can appoint someone to fill Sorelle's spot in November, but that at this time it doesn't appear to be the case.
Other sources said that Sorelle had been offered employment in West Texas and that he had accepted the offer. It is unknown whether his name will remain on the ballot.
During this election cycle, the county's Republican Party fielded candidates for a number of positions. In fact, there are two runoff races still pending, one for sheriff and another for a constable's position. In the sheriff's position, Victor Cortez,a Saenz protege while the chief of the Public Integrity Unit will face off former Indian lake Police Chief John Chmabers, who he helped to prosecute and convict. In the constable's race,  Pedro "Pete" Delgadillo  will face  Armando Mora (409) in the May runoff.
Nonetheless, if Sorelle leaves, that leaves only Saenz as an active candidate for the November general election for district attorney, a considerable savings in time and money for the incumbent.
"Hopefully that means that Saenz will now concentrate on enforcing the law and not on the constant public relations efforts that have characterized his performance since he took office in 2013," said a county administrator.

Alamo, so no republican candidate, then it is a cakewalk, rep party cant substitute anyone state law, only way would be a write in candidate, which would be a long shot but who know, that's it. I knew Masso could win, way too much baggage-too much dirty laundry. Good grief.

Congratulations Luis! Even if he won by 700 votes he still won! He also displayed integrity while others resorted to mudslinging. BTW isn't Sylvia suppose to remain neutral. She is a public servant. Sylvia voices her favoritism loudly and seems to try to throw punches by the bunches at Luis. Is this a cry for attention for the county clerk. As a lady, she should mind her manners, as a public servant, remain neutral and as a person, remember she should put down her gloves and focus on doing her job. Joe Rivera kept that position out of the lime light. If she doesn't like her job she should step down. If she wants to keep it she needs to focus or eventually be voted out of office. I can't believe a clerk considers herself above the DA. Sylvia you seem like a good person; however, now you need to do your job!!! Maybe cameron county needs to start looking for a new county clerk soon.

Brownsville is finally getting tired of being stupid enough to support rats like Masso. To all those elected officials that tried supporting Masso, FUCK YOU and go to hell.

If they somehow stop Saenz they won't learn anything and continue deception for another cycle. Politically they cornered themselves. However, money will keep flowing for another 4 years, and will sooth things a bit. But I think some of them are fully aware now of the danger they are playing with. They may be increasingly more nervous that each next cycle things will only get nastier, and eventually the mob they thought was under control, will turn against them.

Requires local support to get the rats out... when the locals don't help.. the outsidersget the message and move on ... Jeremy didn't mess up .. your local big wigs made the decision. Corruption will prevail until you the people support the change

No you're right Jeremy didn't "mess up", he quit. He made the choice to seek the Republican seat and quit. A real up stand up guy right there for you. Who knows maybe Jeremy was collaborating with Masso (THE THREE TIME LOSER, Masso's new nickname should be The Strike Out King Masso) to somehow skew votes away from Saenz (how'd that work out Strike Out King?). I mean it's just a little odd he up and moves outta town abandoning his campaign when it truly should have been getting started. Not so odd if his only purpose to try team up with Masso in garnering votes away from Saenz, again how'd that end up Carlos Can't Win Sh*t Masso? Oh well enjoy Alpine, or Mayberrry or Who-ville wherever it is you chose to go instead of living up to your word in Cameron County, enjoy!

hey if there is a write in for tax assessor then I hope there is a write in for the DA job too, I quite frankly don't like Luis Saenz, he is equally worth or if not below that Masso ojete guy for crookedness, dishonesty or untrustworthy. Es mala gente-evil, corrupt, chueco like a mesquite tree.
