Today is election day in the Texas Southmost College runoff race between Dr. Tony Zavaleta and Brownsville Independent School District instructor Evelyn Cantu.
Who's backing Cantu to a policy-making position on the community college?
We tried to find out, but her failure to file a campaign financial report due on the eighth day before the election prevented us from learning who her backers are and how mcu of a bankroll she has. So much for transparency.
Zavaleta, on the other hand, lists no contributions, meanng that he has single-handedly paid for his campaign.
We know that her report due 30 days before the election included contributions from Carlos Marin and wife Elena as well as contributions from Mary Rose Cardenas, the former TSC trustee who used to support former UTB-TSC "partnership" president Julieta Garcia. We are also told that the Cardenas had shifted alliances to Zavaleta after the race came to a runoff between Tony and Cantu.
But has Marin, named as the job developer for millionaire Mike Hernandez's OP 10.33, continued to infuse cash into the the Cantu campaign?
Or how about Hernandez?
Or does she have regular folks – a la Bernie Sanders – pitching in their pennies to see her win?
Why didn't Cantu file her report as is required by election law?
The voters deserve to know who is bankrolling her efforts to be a part of the board that guides the education efforts that will affect students in the district encompassing the areas between South Padre Island, Los Fresnos, Rancho, Viejo and over to San Pedro and all of Brownsville.
So much for transparency, following the rules, and an open door policy.
We have made it plain in these cyber pages that TSC cannot afford to have a trustee who has to go through a learning curve on mazking policy. It needs someone who already knows the ins and outs of rebuilding a community college and making the first rung of the learning experience affordable and accessible to all of the residents of the district.
This is the last chance we will have to vote for someone who knows and understands this and – to our criterion – Zavaleta is the clear choice in this election. Don't stay home. Vote today. Polls are open Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Below is the list of polling places for election day.

Can't vote for Tony Zavaleta, regardless. He failed TSC while kissing Julieta Garcia's ring, he failed his students and the community because he failed to protect our TSC tax dollars and the community college. JUST SAY NO TO TONY ZAVALETA!!!!!

Cardenas is playing both sides, with a preference I bet for Cantu.
Voting for Tony Z. He really should have led TSC and the defunct UTB where it not for the elitist, feminist, unmexican-wannabe of Julieta Garcia who drove that institution like a personal institution and is waiting on the sidelines to be Hillary's education secretary...watch..

Polling indicates Tony Zavaleta has won the election! I stood outside a polling station and asked pretty much everybody walking out who they voted for and roughly 85 percent of the 300+ people I surveyed said Zavalata. Remember: you read it here first!
