(Ed.'s Note: By all accounts, a goodly number of people representing about 11 different organizations joined a group of activists for Brownsville's 2016 Juneteenth Celebration.
Local activists have been calling for the removal of the rock honoring Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederate States of America and asking the city commission to place it in a museum. Opponnets say that removing it would amountt o detroying the their heritage. The city commisison has not moved on the issue.
Even Eugene Fernandez, from the neo-confederate coven hiding out at the Brownsviulle Historical Aociety was there to check it out. Fernandez's family has ties to the Confederacy and is one of the biggest opponents to rtemoving the rock from Washington Park. Although friendly, he must have felt out of place because he only stayed for a little bit.
Some of the organizations that participated in the event are listed below. Numerous park visitors, especially neighborhood kids, stopped by to enjoy the food and hear the presenters. Several homeless folks stopped by and were very thankful.
-- Friends of the West Rail Trail
-- All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church of Brownsville
-- Save RGV from LNG
-- South Texas Civil Rights Project
-- Secular Humanists of the RGV
-- Fuerza del Valle
-- Citizens Against Confederate Memorials
-- RGV NORML
-- PFLAG Harlingen
-- Mark Clark: Galleria 409
-- Randy Gonzales: Write in Candidate for Cameron County Tax Assessor
On the other side of the Jefferson Davis Memorial Rock is this neo-Confederate website.

In the name of "Political Correctness" many liberals seek to change history. This assault on the Confederacy is much akin to ISIS destroying the history in Palmayra. Our history is our history, good or bad. Political Correctness in the US these days means:
1. Only whites or those that claim to be white can be racists. Or, all whites are racist.
2. To protect all minorities, we have expanded race from a biological term, to a cultural term. Just another way to divide the nation...a goal of Obama and Liberals.
3. Read Alinsky's 8 requirements to establish change from democracy to socialism. Keep people poor, take away guns, control health care and control all resources.
4. Willie Nelson owed the IRS lots of money; the IRS took his property, accounts and resources. Al Sharpton owes the IRS millions but has not been touched.
and on, and on and on.
Not "neo-Confederate website" - it's a blog - unlike yours - which loves on Brownsville culture and history and seeks truth - not lies - like you and your ilk Mr Montoya
"White people are the cancer of the world." - writer Susan Sonntag
While bad history is history, there is a difference between acknowledging it and allowing people to try justifying the glorification of it.
The neo-confederates we have faced in this city have tried their best to shift the focus of the American Civil War from slavery to other reasons, which they argue are more relevant. Some have outright denied racism was a part of it at all, despite the fact that the heads of the confederacy supported their fight with very racist statements.
NOTHING justifies a human's desire to keep another human as property. NOTHING justifies trying to revive a defeated movement's legacy when that legacy and those attached will make another group feel inferior.
That is why our movement toward equality and respect will continue, in spite of the criticisms from anonymous keyboard warriors. We will proudly and publicly continue to be the faces of Brownsville's social progress in whatever ways we can, through education and raising awareness, both online and at organized events.
To the person who claims that "This assault on the Confederacy is much akin to ISIS destroying the history in Palmayra."
1. Wrong. Anyone can be racist.
2. Wrong. Those who favor honoring traitors who enslaved people divide this nation.
3. What's wrong with socialism?
4. Partially true.
A goodly number? Only if less than two dozen is a goodly number. This was a gathering of far left wing malcontents and haters. These people and the groups listed are irrelevant to Brownsville and it's people.
For the record, Gene Fernandez has no connection and is not a member of any Confederate heritage group. He is one of the most knowledgeable people concerning local history and gets invited to speak at many different community groups. He is owned an apology by the author of this blog.
Fortunately for Brownsville, the left wing haters are very few in numbers, they just make allot of noise. Never confuse noise, with relevancy, correctness or sanity.
I spit on the "faces of Brownsville's social progress" who act as if they are taking over Brownsville, Texas to teach their version of history. They need to learn the history before they can appreciate or interpret it.
Do what you want guys! Move The Rock here, there, or a museum, but The Rock will still be in Brownsville. So what's the BIG deal about moving the rock? Stop wasting your time, and everyone else's time. Viva La Paz!
