This morning, the family of Eric Perez, the 22-year-old Brownsville man who was killed in a drive-by shooting in San Antonio laid him to rest.
Those of us who have been around this town and county soon found out that the young man, a 2012 Hanna High School Graduate, was none other than the grandson of former Cameron County Sheriff Alex Perez. Eric was the son of Mark Perez, Alex Perez's son/
According to San Antonio Police Department reports, Eric Perez was shot dead last Wednesday while walking at about 7 p.m. in the 4700 block of West Avenue. He was fatally shot once in the chest, the Bexar County Medical Examiner confirmed.
When police arrived at the scene, they found Perez unresponsive as his body lay half on the sidewalk and on the street in front of a gas station.
News reports indicate that despite an earlier report that Perez had just deboarded a VIA bus, investigators and transit police confirmed Thursday that there were no buses operating in the area when he was shot, VIA said in an email Thursday.
A couple of witnesses who remained at the scene told police they saw a sedan leaving the scene, but one said it was white and another said the vehicle was black.
Our condolences go to his family.

Whatever the reason I'm sure it was not worth this young man's life. God bless his family, friends, and loved ones during these tough times. To his survivors, my condolences. I did not know him or his family but its just a heartless crime.
