WE KNOW IT'S PALM BLVD., MAYOR, BUT HOW ABOUT A TRIM?

(Ed.'s Note: Palm Blvd. is looking a little shaggy, according to a growing number of local residents who say that the city's showcase residential boulevard might be in need of a little trim right about now. They sent us these photos to make their point and say that when the Washingtonian palms are allowed to shag out, they become attractive habitats for bats, spiders, cockroaches and other vermin who like the protection afforded them by the overgrowth of old fronds.
"It's not like Da Mayor can't see them," said an irate resident. "I drive by there every day and have noticed that it's been months since they trimmed them. They look awful." As an example, the sender of these photos said that the two single shaggy palms in the middle photo are in the median directly within sight of the mayor's house at the corner of Ebony and Palm. On the other hand, Da Mayor has often favored the shaggy look himself, so perhaps he thinks the city should be in his image.)

In a dusty, shitty bordertown, there are no boulevards of beauty. The palm trees look like that because they know exactly where they are - unlike the unsophisticated residents who see themselves as being civilized.

When I see the dead untrimmed palm fronds hanging down on the Palm Blvd. palm trees, I am reminded of Micòl in the The Garden of the Finzi-Continis. As she bikes through the Garden to the tennis court she points out her seven “Graybeards” — the Washingtonia filifera that her Granny Josette got from the Rome Botanical Garden.

I believe that the Palm Blvd. washingtonia palms are robusta. The filifera are said to be more cold tolerant and probably grow better in Ferrara. The untrimmed dead fronds of the filifera and robusta look the same, like gray beards. When they are trimmed, it looks as if they have been scalped. Granny Josette and Micòl preferred the gray beards.

How do you compare a man's head to a play tree?

I have always told my spouse how it really upsets me to see Brownsville so dirty and not kept. When you drive around and see the grass growing at our major intersections, weeds coming out of the sides of our expressways "again at major intersections" and trees not being trimmed junk cars right next to the Los Tomates Bridge across the street from the Border Patrol Station. What a eyesore. I thought we had a Brownsville Beautification Committee???????????????

Yes, a manicured world is more comfortable to many. Mother Nature took thousands of years working out the best way to grow a palm but we seem to think we know best how the tree should be developed. And if you don't like the roaches and other insect you should hope for more bats. Bats eat incredible numbers of insects every night including mosquitos. If this Zika thing happens we will be wishing for all the bats we can get. In places that understand these things they celebrate their bats. Look at the Congress Street bridge summer colony of Mexican Free-tailed Bats. There is a nightly gathering of people come to watch the evening bat departure as the tens or even hundreds of thousands bats leave for the nightly insect hunt. Bats are good. Aside from providing shelter for bats those hanging dead leaves help protect the trunk of the tree below the crown where they help it maintain a healthy temperature summer and winter.

Complain all you want but the dead frongs also provide shelter to migrating birds who don't have time to build nests. Yes, the palms look messy, but it's natural and they have a purpose.

Brownsville is better suited for alacranes, viboras, cantinuchas, pinche pueblo feo. Many of the crimes committed in the court house are Brownsville residents. El pinche Mayor, no vale tres cachuates.

This drag should be renamed "Pat Ahumada Boulevard!" Honor the Mexicans first!!!!!!

The dying leaves of the palms on Palm Blvd are symbolic of the dying of the city of Brownsville. While other cities in the RGV progress, Brownsville swirls down the toilet....flushed by our city officials.
