(Ed.'s Note: As if Cyclobia – the late afternoon weekend exercise in revitalization of the downtown area by closing the streets and having suburbanites ride around in expensive bikes – wasn't bad enough for downtown business, we now have the City of Brownsville scaring away shoppers by paving streets on Saturday morning. Historically, Saturday is the busiest day of the week for local, Matamoros, and northern Mexico residents to buy their wares downtown. Local merchants depend on this day. So what does the city do? Here we have a paving crew restricting traffic to one lane of the two-lane street and shutting off the curb to parking. We're also sure that the city crews will have to be paid overtime to work Saturdays. A merchant who sent us this photo wants to know whose bright idea this was and why they weren't consulted to arrange for another day when this paving could be done. Is this another example of the COB's Uneconomic Development?)

Probably someone in public works needed money for the honey, sanchas, movida or parranda. So they did it on Saturday to bill the city time and a half. Ta bien 8 horas at time and a half.

Remember when Chirinos left the transportation department in the red (BISD), well, who runs public works? and for how long has the person been running the department? Is that person another Omar Lucio? (someone way past retirement age and letting the department be run by others), someone who has no idea what the employees do and lets them run extra hrs.? but when you have the city manager taking time to attend weddings in Portugal and not looking into city matters, when you have a mayor and a comissioner more interested in bike lanes that in looking into how to make our city prosper you also have cities like Mcallen and Edinburg, even Port Isabel and SPI doing activities for halloween, dia de los muertos, that the citizens of Brownsville have to travel to other valley towns when our hometown is TRULY DEAD in culture for the common family. Unless it is time for an outdated boring Charro Days, EXPENSIVE for a family of 4 and same boring Sombrero Fest, not everyone likes Jazz or accordion music.
Ah, but we keep on voting the same inept people. Being the largest city in population DOES NOT translate to being the best city to live in. Unless you are making 80 to 100 thousand and have the means to travel to large cities outside of the RGV for your entertainment.

Most of us missed it because we don't go downtown, especially on the weekend. And, many who live downtown were at the "pulga" in Olmito. Maybe the city administrators were catching up after the visit to Portugal.

You're right, this is a huge inconvenience for downtown merchants. Not because their customers can't park, but because it forces the merchants to park further away instead of right in front of their stores while they feed the meter all day. The mensos can't understand that their laziness is costing them

Downtown merchants and blog commenters like to blame the city for their unfortunate situation. Before the 90s downtown was thriving because the peso was strong and downtown merchants didn't sell crappy products. The peso has since devaluated and merchants sell chinito shit and still expect to prosper. Get real and stop blaming the city.
