It's an old tradition at the Brownsville Independent School District.
After every school board election, the superintendent usually calls in the winners and has the secretary of CFO Lorenzo Sanchez – in this case Pat Perez, also BISD board secretary– do an informal swearing in in the board room.
"It's like a courtesy from the superintendent and the district," said a former trustee. "Pat Perez usually does the swearing in. Everyone knows about it."
Well, this time there was no congratulatory phone call to the three new members Laura Perez-Reyes, Phil Cowen, Dr. Sylvia Perez-Atkinson, or the single incumbent Minerva Peña.
Sources close to the board say that when Peña and Cowen went to the main office and knocked on the door, no one wanted to open the door. Once inside the building, they knocked on the board room door and CFO Sanchez opened the door just a crack and did not allow them to go inside and let Perez swear them in.
"He told them that he was under strict orders from administration not to allow anyone in the board room," they said. "Apparently, Superintendent (Esperanza) Zendejas wasn't pleased with some of the election results."
Until the jut-passed election BISD election, Zendejas enjoyed the support of the board majority controlled by Joe Rodriguez. Rodriguez, with Jose Chirinos, Carlos Elizondo and Cesar Lopez, gave her a two-year extension and upped her salary past $250,000 just before the elections. Now, with the board reorganization coming up, no one knows what majority will form. Already there are indications that the majority is chafing under Rodriguez's one-man show and may opt to form a majority where he doesn't guide their direction. Rodriguez recently suffered a stroke that left him bed-ridden for almost a week.
With Cowen going after incumbent Otis Powers for not being more pro-active and involved with the personnel grievances as he should have been and crowing up his achievements in his past live as BISD president, it is likely he will want to take a direct hand in making some changes on the board and the district.
Add the election of Atkinson, a former Assistant Superintendent at BISD, to the board mix, and the dynamics become unpredictably volatile.
Could it be that perhaps the election results didn't go Zendejas' way?

Wrong again. Bohemia breath! You are the worst reporter and blogger, Juan. get your shit togther, bro.
Zendejas "La Pendeja" should have gotten Bocanegra on her side. Now she's gonna deal with Silvia "Marimacha" Atkinson and it's not gonna be pretty.
If this is factual then Dr should be fired with pay suspended immediately.
Y la Cata Apa? The witch is dead, the witch is dead, que bueno que the witch is dead.
Zendejas is a pendeja and is acting like a crybaby....she should look to Killary, who wore purple and sighed, but was graceful in her loss to Trump. Zendejas is acting like Julieta Garcia....out to get those who oppose her. Sad to see our school district under the control of such losers.
Anonymous at 6:04. Make up your mind. Fired or suspended ? LoL!
Silvia is going to kick some ass bet on that!
Duck!!!!! Not Minerva Peña Again...may the good Lord help us!!!!
No one should be sworn in until the votes are canvassed. Zendejas is correct in this instance.
Cowen we voted for you...........
we need for you to make a difference.

Fired with pay suspended.
Just so you will get it through your thick skull.
Count her votes, you. Better know she's coming to settle a score with a lot of people backing her up.
Zendejas is in for a rude awakening. Unless Atkinson backs off. No one has to worry about the dope Laura. She'll play along with whoever. Too bad she can't sleep with Dr Z, she'd get alot more done smh.
Correct! No one should EVER be sworn in until the votes have been canvassed. If it was done before, just consider who the supers were.
Law does not allow canvassing of votes until Nov 17 and such the next meeting for BISD. If Sylvia is coming in with that attitude, I am completely surprised, well, not really, but she should know better. She is a smart lady and knows what she can and can not do as a board member, so she can make sure she is going to be watched like a hawk. I will be the one to personally file a governance abuse if she thinks she is going to continue treating people like she feels. After all, she says she is coming in to help, not hinder what is already taking place in BISD. Minerva is OK, but she needs to know when to "shut-up." She is very rude and is always talking when others are talking but she scratches out the eyes of anyone who tries to talk over her -
but then she blesses them for scratching out their eyes. Get your stuff together and work with a winning team with new ideas and thoughts. Leave the hate home or stay home yourself.
This post is total made up BS. They always swear in the new members befor the next board meeting. Never the next day.
thanks to our ex-board members for four good years of service.
caty
powers
chirinos
ps some of you 8 years
Obviously you do not attend board meetings or you would know that swearing ins are done the day of the meeting and the new board members replace the old ones at that meeting. I am hoping the new board members have read the agenda and know what is going to occur. There is a special called board meeting for the next day, so that may be so the new board will get a chance to oversee the agenda and prepare for it, if they know what they are doing. No saben lo que les espera. Vale mas que se pongan al alva!!!
Zendejas needs to go...
Did Zendejas step on your toes? Only those that she is weeding out are the ones that are complaining about her. She is the hardest working superintendent that we have ever had and is very visable and well known through out the community. Have you bothered to study what she has done to improve this district that had been stagnant since she left after her first term. Mejor te vas tu!!!!
Please!!!
Your nose is so brown that is keeping you from seeing what's right in front of your eyes.
ha ha
what has she done ?
