CHALUPA FUNDRAISER DRAWS YOUTH BOXING SUPPORTERS

(Ed.'s Note: Between 30 to 40 chalupa lottery players braved cool weather Saturday night to support the efforts of the Southmost Brownsville Community Boxing Club by participating in a chalupa lottery fundraiser. Fred "Chacho" Avila, the boxing coach, welcomed them to the Golden Corral Restaurant at 4555 N Expressway where owner Gaspar Hernandez provided a private room at no charge to support the club's efforts to reach out to youngsters and teach the sport.

Since the inception of the club some 15 years ago, numerous private supporters including doctors, businessmen and other professionals have supported the club's efforts to inspire youth in participating. The club trains is a boxing gym atop Tony's Body shot at 407 Burton Drive and owned by Tony Garcia, who lets the boxing club train there.

Coach Avila said he had applied for city funding without success and had to strike out on his own when no help was forthcoming. He said the club hopes to host a boxing event later this month where the public will have a chance to watch the youngsters show off their skills inside the ring. If you want to support the club's efforts, call Coach Fred "Cacho" Avila at 459-5136.)
