William Habern, the attorney for Tejano superstar Jose “Joe” Lopez who was approved for parole from the Texas Department of Corrections last week will be giving an update on the status of the Grammy Award-winning Mazz frontman at 3 p.m. today on the steps of the Tex -Mex Dancehall.
The dance hall is located at 1069 N Frontage Rd,
Lopez, sentenced to 20 years in prison after a jury fund him guilty of of having sexual relations with a 13-year-old relative in 2004, was incarcerated in 2006.
His family has long argued that he was the victim of prosecutorial misconduct. The Cameron County District Attorney at the time was Armando Villalobos, now in federal prison after he was found guilty on one count of racketeering dealing with taking an $80,000 bribe for letting a convicted murderer go.
Villalobos was also found guilty of conspiracy to commit racketeering where the jury found he used the office of the DA to commit crimes.
He was also found guilty on four counts for aiding and abetting as well as taking money in the Amit Livingston case, a money house seizure case, a money truck seizure case, and from attorney Joe Valle, who was also sent to federal prison.Lorenzo Lopez, the singer's attorney, told the Brownsville Herald yesterday that:

"We actually have proof that Joe Lopez is innocent, and that the only reason he is where he is is because the ex-district attorney (Armando Villalobos) convinced the jurors he was guilty,” Lorenzo said. “That’s what (today) will be about. The exoneration and the other battles we’re facing.”
