IS THAT R(EBECCA)OSE GOWEN OF SUNNYBROOK FARM?

By Juan Montoya
We can only guess that the reelection campaign sign approved by the City of Brownsville At-Large "B" incumbent Commissioner Dr. Rose Gowen is playing up what she believes are the signature accomplishments of her four-year stint at city hall.

There are farmer's market and bicycle trail themes all over the signs that have started appearing in town. And while there is a certain endearing Shirley Temple-like aspects to the signs, it also speaks to the fact that so far Gowen's tenure has been one full of all image and little substance.

Periodically, she will appear at city commissioner meetings wearing cyclist garb and informing city channel viewers of the upcoming Cyclobia event where the main drags in the city are closed and similarly-clad cyclists pedal around the deserted streets much to the disgust of business owners.

"I pay taxes," said a bar owner on Adams Street. "Then they pick a weekend to shut us down when we count on those days to do our business. I have to pay my workers and how am I going to do that when they stop traffic from reaching our business?"

We've said it before and we'll say it again. The two incumbents who are seeking reelection – Gowen and District 4 incumbent John Villarreal – have a lot to answer for. During their terms, they have allowed Hizzoner Da Mayor Tony Martinez unfettered power to plunder the city coffers and pass on the costs to the city's residents.

A superficial listing of these issues hanging around Gowen's and Villarreal's neck like albatrosses are their votes on the purchase of the Casa del Nylon for $2.3 million, the proposed basement-rate sale to the UT System and move of Lincoln Park to a site across from the sewage treatment plant, the 36 percent hike in utility rates to pay the city's $325 million share of the Tenaska $500 million gas-powered electric plant, and the hiring of and continued support of ethics-challenged city attorney Mark Sossi as a full-time employee.

That's just a start. We're sure their opponents (Erasmo Castro and Ben Neece) have a basket full of issues they will air in upcoming debates or media appeals. With any luck, Castro will send La Chisquida Gowen pedaling back to the farm and Neece will finally dispatch Villarreal to his tortilla machine at La Milpa.

Commissioners need to take actions to create jobs, improve city infrastructure and provide a safe environment for citizens. Instead they have overspent and spent foolishly (Casa de Nylon), promoted biking and hiking and paying for trails, bumps in the street to protect bikers.....again, the public pays. Projects that bring no or very little income. The farmers market might just make more money and sell all their produce if relocated to the flea market in North Brownsville. The current city commission and mayor have the city swirling down the toilet, while other communities and cities in the Valley prosper. No leadership is the reason.

We need new leaders, we had enough of these two. Castro, Neece and Garza. They will do the right decisions.

Dr. Gowen will win, she has a vision for Brownsville, stop being so negative about her. We need more of her fitness programs to get this town out of sickness and diseases.

It's a nice picture. Such a beautiful woman.

Sorry Erasmo, not even Ben's popularity is going to save you. Ben, ditch this loser before he tanks you! This guy has got a brown touch in more than his XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXL undies.

Castro is all talk. In it for himself.

Cyclobia is one of those times when I do go downtown and it is packed. We usually bike over to a bar afterwards and they are all open, and full of other bike people too. Not sure which bar was closed? If they did decide to close for the day that is a shame because these events are always packed like Sombrero Fest with people.

Mejor malo por conocida que bueno por conozer. Goes the saying
Sorry but ABC (anybody but castro).

Erasmo Castro should be named Erasmo Costra . Like a scab he is annoying and the more we pick on him he keeps coming back
Hahaha
Pretty good one by me.

And you believe Gowen's intentions in running for public office are altruistic? How ignorant can you be? Brownsville's city management is a joke. It's time for some new blood and new ideas. Vote Erasmo Castro City Commissioner At-Large B.

Brownsville needs infrastructure improvements to attract businesses that would provide employment opportunities, not fitness programs, get real.

At least he has the cajones to call out the lack of accomplishments, wasteful and useless policies and actions that current city management has gotten away with all these years. Erasmo has a true vision and plan for progress giving the city a chance to work for the city and her residents and move us in a direction that allows us to compete economically with the upper valley. We deserve real city management that works for the enrichment of the city as a whole instead of the enrichment of a select few. We are tired of same old same old do nothing rhetoric of current city administration. I want to see a positive change in Brownsville city management. I want to see Brownsville move into the 21st century. My vote goes to Erasmo Castro.

The sickness and disease the city of Brownsville suffers from can be directly traced to its origin, City Hall. Erasmo Castro will initiate programs not only to decontaminate and cleanse the pestilence
that has lingered in our city administration for all the years, he will be the eyes snd ears that will initiate a maintenance program to ensure the scourge which has kept Brownsville from reaching its true economic potential does not return.

Erasmo Castro likes the racist and misogynistic comments of his followers on Facebook. Is this the type of leader we want for our children? This city will not progress with this bigoted mentality.

Erasmo Castro looks unhealthy. He needs to start riding his bike down the trails.

WTf!#!!

Im tire of all the careless spending on hardly used bike lines and Ill attended cylovias. Too much funds being spent on overtime, we need new leaders that will address the most important issues such as street maintenance, drainage and upkeep of the parks. I'm voting for Erasmo Castro & William Garza . Unfortunately I cannot vote for Ben Neece but wish him good luck. If you want to continue seeing wasteful spending, go ahead and keep the current city commissioners.

You need to shut up and stop with your moronic personal attacks. Can you please come up with a new theme, something a little more original? Lo mismo, lo mismo, lo mismo!

And the city of Brownsville has progressed so well with current city administration.
GTF OUT OF TOWN!

Nobody can tell me what this Castro fruit cake does for a living. Volunteering at the cancer center does not make you money. Also please look into his criminal record. I think for some kind of fraud. From what I can see on his Facebook, he constantly begs people to take his fat ass out to eat all the time and plays with his cats. Maybe he should join one of Dr. Gowen's Fattest Looser programs. Yes, we need new blood in city council but Facebook boy is not the solution.

castro and sister linda (yes the one that married a follower, cause couldn't find a victim of her own) are full of shit. they are in it just to make a name for themselves since they haven't been able to. bunch of loosers

I have acutely seen the changes that Gowen has made in this city. Castro definitely picked the wrong person to run against. I'm looking forward to the change Ben would make to the commission.

I love the bike trails. I've lost 30 pounds from walking them. No gym, just using our free, paved trails across the city. Get real, wave goodbye to health insurance with Trumpcare. If you don't get healthy on your own forget about insurance covering you anymore. I'm grateful our city has this trails for us.

Anonymous said...

Do these ignorant Castro supporters even know the meaning of "pet projects"? Educated and fit people have been asking for trails for a long time. We finally have them. Gowen is doing a wonderful job.

Thanks Dr. Rose !

Dr. Gowen is good - but her deadbeat Husband is worthless. Feed some of that healthy food to that fat fuck.

Get for real, one thing is walking trails vs bike lanes on already congested downtown streets. Too much needless spending on useless bike lines, just see for yourself how many bicylists use this bike lanes on a daily basis. The commission keeps reducing the streets for nothing. We already have miles and miles of established bike trails, no more bike lines on city streets, please. Stop wasting taxpayers monies like it was your own.

If you say you don't see people in bike lanes that's because you don't live in downtown. I live in downtown, and know for a fact that people use bike lanes. Just because you don't see the lazy mass population using them doesn't mean no one uses them. I'd like to thank Mrs. Gowen!

Use the bike trails before you get run over. There miles and miles of bike trails, they start downtown and goes all the way to FM 511. Bike lanes are too expensive to maintain and you hardly see anyone using them.
