JUST HOW BIG OF A PROBLEM ARE PLASTIC BAGS LOCALLY?

(Ed.'s Note: Brownsville has outlawed plastic bags for a few years now and required shoppers to pay $1 at the cash register if they wanted them. Then the Texas Attorney General's Office stepped in and made them stop the practice saying the charge was not legally defensible. Now Brownsville can't charge for the bags and just outlawed them altogether. As you can see, bags are still a problem as they are shredded and will end up in the drainage ditch across Old Port Isabel Road from the Walmart at Boca Chica Blvd.

Will the bags clog up the drains? Probably not. But if you go across the street and see the wildlife that lives in the ditch it's easy to imagine one of these ducklings or wading birds choking on the plastic. What to do? Educate, educate, educate!)

The plastic bags aren't the problem.....its the people who misuse them. Just like guns don't kill people, but people kill people; and pencils don't misspell words, people misspell words. This problem exists because there are citizens in our community who misuse the bags. It's time we stop looking for a way to ignore irresponsibility. We don't recycle in Brownsville because the citizens don't give a shit about protecting the environmentand won't take the time to recycle.....same with plastic bags.

Brownsville is too close to Matamoros to have responsible citizens that care about litter, clean water ways etc. etc. etc. Matamoros is a festering cesspool and that is the way those that live there want it.

People calling Brownsville citizens not concerned about litter and clean water, or that it doesn't mean anything to you, etc. WHY are you even leaving an opinion?
THERE ARE people in Brownsville that CARE about not throwing trash in the street, about using recycled bags, about keeping their individual space clean. ANY of the people that leave negative or insulting comments, how many days a week do you recycle? Do you tell a person NOT to throw trash on the street? Are your next door neighbors from Matamoros that is how you know they are the ones doing the littering? Or are you the litterer blaming others for your faults?
It's easy to blame others because WE have to start with OURSELVES.

Thank you for the photo.

When the bag ban first came out I was annoyed. I hated it and I hated being charged when I forgot to bring bags.

However, soon I bought a backpack and began to realize what a huge difference it made. I realized I had been throwing away hundreds of bags after using them just one time, for nothing more than sheer laziness. Bags that didn't disappear just because I threw them out, but ended up clogging up our drains, polluting our ocean and our water. It brings attention to how selfish we are. Proud to see our community doing the right thing. In the end we were only poisoning ourselves.

City comission should have no business outlawing consumer behavior. Proof if this is that there are several states that are making it illegal for city comissions to outlaw bags. Internet search yields many such.

Has anyone ever heard of George Carlin?? Listen to his take on earth day..sums it up about plastic.
