Details are still coming in the death of at least one person and another injured as a result of an attempted escape by an inmate from the Cameron County Rucker-Carrizales Correction facility from a Brownsville clinic at about 1:09 p.m. today.
The Brownsville Police Dept. reports that the inmate identified by other sources as Michael David Garcia died as a results of injuries sustained with officers in a shootout in San Benito.
Preliminary news reports indicate the inmate had been escorted to the ABC Clinic near the Four Corners area at 3675 Boca Chica Blvd. by a corrections guard who was struck and beaten there and then was disarmed by the inmate. The inmate allegedly slashed the guards throat with an unknown instrument.
Early reports indicate that protocol was not followed by the county since a dangerous inmate should have been escorted by at least two officers. Also, the sources indicate that he was not shackled and handcuffed around the waist allowing him to reach up and slash the correction guard's throat. That guard is said to be in critical condition at Valley Regional Hospital.
Reports also indicate that the inmate took the guard's service revolver and a rifle and ammunition before hijacking a car from a nearby residence. The Brownsville Police Dept. reported that The suspect swam across the resaca to a nearby neighborhood on Fruitdale Terrace where he entered a residence by force asking for some vehicle keys while pointing the weapon. The homeowner attempted to calm the suspect down and suspect shot and killed him. He was identified as Mario Alfredo Martinez.
The inmate fled in the victim's blue blue 2014 Elantra. Police alro reported that a short time later the vehicle and suspect was spotted on Paredes Line Rd and FM 511.
The vehicle pursuit ensued involving multiple agencies going westbound on FM 511 and northbound expressway. The pursuit ended in the San Benito area with officers from several law enforcement agencies involved shooting. Garcia was seriously injured and transported to Valley Baptist in Harlingen where he later expired.
The Brownsville Herald reported that "the chase ended in the industrial park at Williams Road and the frontage road, when the suspect drove into the parking lot of the Gulf Coast Sign Company.
Witnesses near the Gillman Chevrolet car dealership in San Benito said they heard a quick succession of gunshots. One bystander described the scene as a 'concert of lights.'”
Except for the Brownsville man whose car was stolen, neither the inmate, the corrections guard, nor the other possible victims have been officially identified.

So what?!!!!! Write about drinking and womanizing, Guey!
A day when a prisoner dies is a good day. GO TRUMP!!!!
Sheriff Omar Lucio should be reprimanded for allowing this guy out with only one guard and not shackleled. Omar Lucio is too old for this position and too political. Omar Lucio is a dinosaur.
SAn Benito POLICE CHIEF GALVAN informed the news that the prison escapee was shot after Chase in cameron county???
yo Michael......You shouldn't be commenting right now cause your in hiding at home cause of your personal recordings being leaked! lol answer your phones when Del Valle from the Valley morning star calls you or when telemundo is trying to interview you!! Your belly up at home, so your finished. Take your vacation leave before your gone with the Texas Rangers coming Right after you son.
(and requesting leave and then next week on vacation.....tssk tssk tssk !) Oh mikey..... Petunia is still very mad at you..... hehehe!!
Expect one righteous and large law suit by the survivors of the man killed for his care against Cameron Country. If the reports are correct, the county employee was negligent in his restraint of the inmate which was the direct cause of the innocent man's death. Once again the Cameron Country taxpayers will take it in the shorts for our incompetent elected officials and their employees.
What about Mr. Martinez? He was in his home when assaulted and killed because someone did not follow protocol at the jail, before he got in the car and without back up. Who will be blamed for this fiasco? What a shame when
someone can not be safe even in his own home. Why was a guard taking the murderer and not a police officer/sheriff's office instead of riding around in their cars on their cell phones, chasing cars with expired safety stickers.
What a waste.
Last year, Sheriff Deputies started a gun fight in Southmost. They couldn't handle it, so B.P.D. arrived and killed suspect. Today, again, B.P.D. had to clean up Cameron County Sheriff's Department mess. Sounds like we need a new church in town.
Your words are the words in The Herald! Plagiarism?
No SanBenito police chief.... you were not there at the chase when it all happened. Your at home with an unknown emergency leave vacation cause your in the dog house with your sneaky private recordings and re-opened sexual harassment case with The Department . So don't be trying to get some of the spotlight right now. Your no one to be speaking to the public At all. Your Captain should be speaking on what happened on this day, not you. You should be answering the phone to the media when they are asking about your shady situation right now instead of hanging up on them. So turn on your Netflix CSI episodes at home so you can catch up on your "How to be a credible Chief training" or "How to lie to the Texas Rangers." SMH
Who steals a freakin' ELANTRA? ha ha ha
Damn. He would of probably gotten off with 5 year concurrent sentence with our dumbass judges and juroros
Another TRiUMPh!
Sheriff's Department fails again. Why weren't there two guards and why was the prisoner not chained properly. Thank you Sheriff Lucio and the Reyna bros. for your lack of management.
So the protocol wasn't followed and a innocent civilians died. Shouldn't the camaron county,be accountable for the death of the victim.
So the protocol wasn't followed and a innocent civilian died. Shouldn't camaron county be charged for the death of the victim.
Zeke Sauceda, with all the facts that is the best opinion you could come up with? Si que eres in pendejete.
Cameron County and Omar Lucio both no valen cheeseburger
Too many dinosaurs running County Law Enforcement.
County Commissioners might consider privatizing the jails.
Private industry doesn't take chances and sometimes have stricter quality control.
Anonymous at 12:45 Zeke Sauceda has always been an idiot posting his garbage comments .
Ha ha please don't made me laugh
