DA'S MOM PASSES AWAY: SAENZ FLIES BACK FROM ROME

Word has reached us that the mother of Cameron County District Attorney Luis V. Saenz passed away Wednesday after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease.

Filomena Vargas Saenz, 90, died July 26, 2017. 

"Mena," as she was affectionately known, was born August 11, 1926, in Dallas, Texas to Benjamin and Rafaela Vargas. Mena was raised in Carrizo Springs, Texas, attended school and graduated from C.S. I. S. D. She then continued her education at Texas Women's University in Denton, Texas. She was on to marry the late Luis Saenz from Carrizo Springs.

Mena was a single parent who raised and educated her six surviving children, Cameron County District Attorney Luis (Delia), Juan, Ray and Mario Saenz, Velma Gallegos and Eliza Saenz; her sister, Ricarda Vargas; 19 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Luis Saenz was in Rome, Italy, when he got the bad news, according to friends. They said he had arrived in Rome and was there for all  of one afternoon when he got the word and flew back immediately to be with the family.

A Holy Rosary will be recited at 11:00 a.m followed by a funeral mass at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, July 28, 2017, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Brownsville. 

Visitation will be held on Monday, July 31, 2017, from 12:00 p.m to 9:00 p.m at with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. at Leonard Funeral Home, 707 Houston St., Carrizo Springs, TX, (830) 876-2119.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 1, 2017, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic in Carrizo Springs, Texas. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery.

She accomplished her mission very well. It is now up to her children to
reflect on all she taught them and continue to make her proud with all your actions. My condolences to the Saenz family.
