ZENDEJAS, SALAZAR AND HER GIMME! GIMME! FOUNDATION

By Juan Montoya
With Brownsville Independent School District Superintendent Esperanza Zendejas having to make do with only a $285,000 salary until 2019 when it increases to $305,000, she has increasingly championed her Centennial Corporation Foundation to reward deserving students and teachers.

Teachers need to apply for grants up to $3,000 if they can prove to Zendejas they have good enough reason, and students must demonstrate they are worthy recipients of her largess.

After all, given her 266 working days, she will average $1,071.43 a day for her labors. (Click on graphics to enlarge.)

And were does the super get her dough? No, we're not talking about her salary. The board of trustees took care of her just as it did the BISD's attorney Baltazar Salazar with his own $288,000 after the $24,000 raise this year. We're talking about the foundation's cash.

Would you believe the staff of the BISD?

The Zendejas shakedown has been honed to an art with the appeal to BISD personnel to fork over some of their hard-earned cash either through a continuous payroll deduction for the entire 2017-2018 school year or a one-time donation of  $10 to $100 or "other."

It's probably easy for Zendejas to strike a charitable pose since the board has been so generous to her. After all, a $10,000 raise per year is no small potatoes. During the meeting where Salazar was making his pitch for a mere 2.9 percent raise from $264,000 to increase his take, he cited the fact that he had waited patiently until after the board gave Zendejas her raise.

Now, he told the board, it was his turn at the BISD trough. It's all about the kids, of course.

With the board's meeting now limited to once a month with the occasional special meeting to pay the bills and vendors, he will average $24,000 per meeting. Not bad for a hometown boy with connections.

We wonder how much Salazar gave to Zendejas' foundation or if he gave anything at all. But teachers who receive this form in their mail box surely must feel a certain degree of pressure to fork out the cash since the super will know who gave and how much.

Will those who give an arm and a leg to Zendejas so she can announce that her foundation has dispensed awards to her chosen recipients be treated favorably and those who can't afford to be charitable be treated differently?

Has anybody done a comparison of superintendents salaries across the country for school districts the same side as Brownsville? It would be interesting to see how Sendejas salary compares .

If Sylvia Atkinson hates BISD so much that she complains about everything why doesn't she just resign as a board member. What you are going to tell me that Rio Hondo school is perfect. When will you get tired of being Sylvia Atkinson mouth piece. This lady is full of hate and vengenance. Does Sylvia Atkinson actually think that the BISD would run smoother or better under her? She would run it to the ground in one year. Esperanza Zendejas is doing an excellent job. Overcoming all the attacks from Sylvia Atkinson. Come on Juan you could not be so blind.

You know what? The leaders influence our economy and Brownsville's economy sucks so that means our leaders suck too.

Sounds like potential for more corruption...such as the fireman's fund that apparently mission $8000, or the judges adult probation fund that may be out of as much as a million dollars, and there are other examples of fraud of these funds not related with doing business. BISD is the most corrupt of the taxing agencies in Cameron County. We must ask, "Why is Zendejas really doing this?" In the Herald today, I noticed a picture of BISD Trustees and Zendejas serving at the Neighborhood Settlement. The article said they prepared and served the meal. My guess is that some BISD food service person prepared the meal and Zendejas and her friends only showed up for the picture. These assholes seem to be in lots of pictures that doesn't relate to them; this is especially true of Zendejas and Elizondo.

All those high raises for Zendegas and Salazar that why they did away of all THE HALL MONITORS. They were put on the pool if they are not picked for another position sooner or later they will lose their job.

Certainly, comparative studies have been done regarding salaries of superintendent in districts with the same demographics and BISD is NOT, by all means at the top. Running a district with over 7000 employees and 57 schools is no easy job and Dr. Esperanza Zendejas had done so with great success the both times that she has been here. And, those of you who do not know her as the person she is, have not idea what she does over and above her duties as supt. and does it from her heart. What is so good about this is that the students are the ones that recognize this because she is around them and supports them like no other superintendent has. Get involved with the committees and the task forces and volunteer at BISD so you can see how hard this lady works EVERYDAY and never sits at her desk doing nothing. If you have a personal vendetta or opinion about her, talk with her about it and I am sure you will not come out smelling like a rose, and not like some who criticize behind her back, she is not afraid to face any of her non-supporters. She knows what she is doing and she know how to do it well.

The fund is just a way to pay for favors, if you don't contribute, forget about any extra jobs.
