Just like Brownsville has failed to realize its potential, City Commissioner Cesar De Leon will never realize his potential scaling the political ladder. He has come tumbling back to earth and he was only on the first rung.
Is De Leon a racist? If you were living in San Antonio or Austin or Houston or Dallas and you called two assistant district attorneys– who are hard-working females just doing their jobs– "fucking niggers", those communities would draw immediate conclusions.
The individual who cast those aspersions would have to leave town and never return. His family – no pun intended – would be blackballed. But Brownsville, the Third World Capital of the United States that still honors slave owners and traitors to the nation, is a city comfortable with name-calling.
"He didn't really mean those words" his defenders utter. And Donald Trump doesn't really mean any of the terrible statements he utters on a daily basis as he does his best to divide this nation by catering to his ignorant white base?
We like the commissioner at The McHale Report and we feel sorry that he was sucker-punched, but he didn't follow the referee's instructions to keep his arms up at all times. He let his guard down and it appears ex-Fire Chief Carlos Elizondo kayoed him by secretly recording the politico's intemperate remarks. At City Hall these are the days of the long knives and much blood-letting.
Why did De Leon find himself stretched out on the canvas listening to a ten-count? He is an elitist, by skin color, by background and by profession, who could not handle the power bestowed upon him by the voters. Like athletes who suddenly become millionaires moving from the college to the professional ranks, De Leon was too young to step inside the ring. He was all offense and no defense. He believed he was invincible, but the young often believe that they are never going to die.
He thought that as a city commissioner and a lawyer, he could be the kingmaker who could manipulate the movers-and-shakers until he became king. Instead, he wears a crown of thorns. But he isn't the only one bleeding. Brownsville is bleeding. Going back to the beginning of the last century when the Jim Crow citizenry sent the black soldiers packing from Fort Brown, Brownsville is once again in the national spotlight for its intolerance.
Should De Leon resign? We asked that question on Facebook and by a surprisingly overwhelming margin our readers responded that he shouldn't. On Juan Montoya's El Rrun Rrun, where most of the readers comment anonymously, the verdict was decidedly that he should.

Jessica Tetreau is worthless so she gives out proclamations like Oprah gives out gifts. She does this because she needs acceptance and reassurance from people that she is doing "a good job". She has been known to give proclamations even to a kid who helped her pick up her purse at HEB. Really? The commission on behalf of all citizens of Brownsville should thank a kid for helping you pick up your purse? Wow! While only a handful of her proclamations are worthwhile they are dissolved by the many personal favor proclamations that nobody cares about.
One of the worthy ones came on June 20, 2017 but only because someone demanded it from her. It was a proclamation to recognize the equality for the gay community in our city. It was good. I'm not saying gay people did not deserve it. What I am getting to is this. During the meeting Tetreau of course got on Facebook and posted a picture of the presentation. (She always seems more interested in her phone than with the meeting, just watch the next meeting) She went on to post this:
"Historical moment at city hall right now. It's important to resonate a voice of inclusion, justice and love for all in our community. It's important to show our younger generations that they can live without fear of discrimination, harassment, and persecution regardless of their gender, identity, sexual orientation, or gender expression."
Isn't she contradicting herself by supporting Cesar De Leon's racist comments? If she wants any credibility she needs to stand up for those who were discriminated and harassed by him. What dirt does De Leon have on her so she won't go against his outrageously racist comments?
We demand that Carlos Elizondo, Cesar Lopez, Joe Rodriguez to resign from the school Board, these guys are all corrupt!

Can't believe this community has so many people willing to excuse Cesar de Leon for being a racist and a bigot. Can't help but believe that this means that most of those who commented above excuse his racism and bigotry because he is Hispanic. If he were an Anglo, or any other racial or ethnic group, they would be calling for his head and his seat on the commission. Obviously those that say they say worse things every day, don't think they are racist. Let's face it, Hispanics are just as racist as any ethnic or racial group. Cesar de Leon should immediately resign and the Texas and Cameron County Bar Associations should sanction him for his unprofessional statements. His comments are racist. Tony Martinez, like the writers above, seems willing to accept this type of racist and unprofessional language, because he has failed to ask for his resignation...but then again, Tony is playing the "pobrecito" game.
While Elizondo may have a role in taping Cesar de Leon and possibly in the leaking of the tape....it was Cesar de Leon who uttered the racist words on that tape. He should resign his city commission seat and we should put him wherever we put the Jefferson Davis Rock. If those African-American lawyers in the DA's office were taped using similar words against any Hispanic official in Cameron County, there would likely be a lynching. And, by the way, he didn't win by thousands of votes..he barely beat John Villarreal; as a candidate hand picked by Da' Mayor, Tony Martinez. Tony is a "whoosss" who doesn't have the moral courage to urge de Leon to resign.
