THE CLASH OF ARMIES ACROSS CENTURIES HEARD AGAIN

The same sun that blazed down Cabeza de Vaca and his men as they made their way through the humid lands of the Rio Grande in 1598 soared high above Romans, Templar Knights, and other soldiers once more today during Texas Southmost College’s Living History Day.

The event was coordinated by professors at TSC and held at the parking lot of the Civic Center because of soggy conditions due to recent rains.

“I’m very pleased,” stated Professor Robert Ramaker, professor of history at TSC and a main contributor in creating this event. “We had a very good turnout and we’re really pleased the community came out.”

Reenactors portrayed a wide array of history including Roman legionnaire, Templar Knight, conquistador, WWI Marine, and soldiers during the Mexican-American and Civil War. The community was invited to actively participate as well as hold the weapons and armor that led to centuries of victories and, as in the case of the Confederate soldier, defeats.

“I had so much fun today,” a student at the college reported. “I always thought of history as a bunch of pages and names, but it’s super cool to see what these people looked like and how they lived. It really made me reconsider what I thought history was about.”

Reenactors included: Dirk Yarker (Roman Empire), Ibarra (U.S National War, U.S Park Service), Rob Ramaker (Templar Knight), Bruce Kidd (1st Lieutenant Trans Mississippi Confederate soldier), Jing Luo (WWI American soldier), Eloy Garcia (16th century conquistador), as well as others not pictured above.)

Along with reenactors came musket demonstrations as well as archery for the public on behalf of University of Texas- Rio Grande Valley.

At the old TSC and Pan American University I had a history professor who would dress up as a historical character and would lecture about the historical period ie... "La Malinche" (Aztecs, Cortez), Queen Victoria (British territories). She would conduct the class as a first person character telling us stories (historical facts). We would be so into the stories that few of us realized that she was actually lecturing. Her mid-term and final were about all those "stories".
I LOVED her class. History was INTERESTING.

I am amazed that Tony Zavaleta allowed this event to take place. In the past he professed that all these guys were tobacco chewing rednecks. He didn't support these re-enactments as "racist". Surprised that Tony let this happen on "his" campus. Tony is a bigot and and gigantic asshole.

Tony Zavaleta should’ve swam out of the resaca as a dinosaur and eaten the cast alive. The guy has been around since before Christ!

According to current left wing liberal doctrine, this bunch depicted a group of white supremacist oppressors. WTF Montoya, you allowed this to happen, without comment!

There is no such thing as history anymore vato. It is just evil white people screwing black, brown and yellow people.

Sweet Jesus, Onate had zero to do with this part of the country. He did his dirty work in New Mexico. Among other things, when the Acoma Pueblo people refused to give up their winter supplies, a fight ensued and a number of Spaniards were killed. In retaliation Onate enslaved the people and cut off the right foot of any male over the age of 25. He was a genuine, certified son-of-a-bitch. In general the Spaniards of that period were all sons-of-bitches and the children they threw on the indian women grew up to be not much better.

Never mention his name without spitting on the ground!
