Brownsville Mayor Tony Martinez Announces
Search Advisory Task Forces for City Manager, City Attorney

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (October 26, 2017) – Today, Brownsville Mayor Tony Martinez announces the creation of the Search Advisory Taskforce for City Manager and the Search Advisory Taskforce for City Attorney.

The City Manager Search Advisory Taskforce will be comprised of three Brownsville City Commission members: City Commissioner At-Large “B” Rose M. Z. Gowen (Chair); City Commissioner District 3 Joel Munguia (Co-Chair); and City Commissioner District 1 Ricardo Longoria.

The City Attorney Search Advisory Taskforce will be comprised of three Brownsville City Commission members: City Commissioner At-Large “A” Cesar De Leon (Chair); City Commissioner District 2 Jessica Tetreau-Kalifa (Co-Chair); and City Commissioner District 4 Ben Neece.

“By virtue of the vacancy of the City Attorney, as well as the retirement notice and acceptance of the City Manager, the entire City Commission must vote on the eventual appointment of both capacities,” said Brownsville Mayor Tony Martinez. “However, these taskforces shall coordinate the search and recruitment process which will be undertaken to evaluate potential candidates and provide recommendations to the entire City Commission of their findings.”

Additionally, each taskforce will seek the participation of community organizations and members to ensure an inclusive search for both offices.

“More inclusive community participation will result in a more effective and efficient operation of both offices to accommodate the future vision of our city,” Martinez added.

We need a person who has a good vision to destroy the city of Brownsville with little input of taxpayers monies. Plenty of Rats in Cameron County. City commissioners will continue the tradition of mess up political stupidity

Make sure that you list "Knowledge of corruption tactics" as part of their qualifications.
Oh, well, if not, they will learn quickly here in Brownsville. Why not set a task force that does not have any ties to city government so that later on no one will be beholded to anyone. A new selection process needs to be developed and implemented y el mayor should have no say so in this.

The city manager search should be conducted by a reputable specialized firm that does this on a national scale and not by an inexpereienced commission. The head hunters, as we refer to these type of firms, will perform a search based on a defined criteria set by the commission. They will take applications, screen them carefully, before forwarding contenders to be interviewed by the commission. But, if the commission already has someone in mind, there is no point in spending taxpayers money to do a national search for a professional city manager, which is costly, but worth it if the city is the agenda.

In my opinion, the last and best city manger Brownsville had was Kirby Lilljedahl. Kirby had no problem telling members on the commmisison NO, when it needed to said. We do not need a puppet for city manager, we need a professional

I have never seen Brownsville in such turmoil and tainted with so much corruption, not even when I was mayor during the 1990's and between 2007-2011, but for some reason we have lost our way.

In my opinion, what needs to happen is to understand what the problems are and to take a position not to make the same mistakes by hiring a city manager based on personal agendas. I believe we have lost 25 years of progress due to the lack of good management and other cities are capitalizing on our short sightedness and failure to be progressive. Hopefully, this time we will hire a true professional.

In my opinion, what needs to be done immediately is to reassign Pete Gonzalez or have him retire and get an independent person to be interim city manager. The interim must be someone who is not interested in being a permanent city manager and who has the courage to say NO to the mayor and commissioners. A lot of the problems we have is because the past city manager allowed commissioners to micromanage, as long as he got what he wanted, which must stop immediately. Protocols and procedures should be followed and the commission must work through management and management must not be intimidated into submission by allowing personal agendas at the expense of city's needs and priorities. We need someone who can outlined a plan that makes our city the agenda.

I can tell you, the city has been so neglected, which will be costly to put the city back on track. If not done right, you will see tax increases, which I will not vote for. The city must cut expenses where it can, increase revenues and investing in our infrastructure needs to be a priority. We need an interim city manager who is not connected to the past city manager. The interim will need the support of the commission and allowed to evaluate what we have and make the necessary changes needed before a permanent city manager is hired. If we do not do this, there will be no change. Someone new may be intimidated or afraid to make needed changes and it will take the new city manger 6 to 12 months to get familiar enough with administraiton to make changes that should be done now.

Just my opinion.

I think that Pat Ahumada says it right in the above comment except for one thing. Why does he have to bring in Pete Gonzales? Mr. Gonzales is the most ethical and professional and probably the only one in the city's schematic that knows what he is doing. True is the fact that he was or is being under minded by several people within the city and overridden over many recommendations that he has made, but this gentleman knows what he is doing and is very meticulous with his job, but when you have so many chiefs of on the war path, it makes it difficult to function. It is true that he should retire, but only to get away from this group of crooks. Mr. Gonzales is the most sincere and ethical person in a position that is so important and just ask yourself why they would bring in so many other people to help him within his department. He did not need anyone's help cause he knew what he was doing.
Shame on you for doing so!!!!

"I have never seen Brownsville in such turmoil and tainted with so much corruption, not even when I was mayor ..."

You may not have noticed it sir, but we did. Your handling of commission meetings was a joke. Every meeting was a circus.

You personally involved yourself in issues that caused embarrassing and unwanted attention for the city.

I could go on and on.

Before you go on your rants, my comments are not based political vendettas or the many usual excuses you post. I don't know you or care to know you.

Just my opinion.

Mr. Ahumada you remind me of a recovering alcoholic, not saying you were addicted to "alcohol" but addicted to the corruption in Cameron County. You know the first steps is to stay away from "alcohol" in your case stay away from politics. I believe you mean well, but the damage is done and you nor the corrupt commissions nor politicians can put" Humphy Dumpy together again". In other words we must built a new Humphy Dumpy. Your advise in my opinion is well worded, but as you can see there in the Commissioner Court, are many, many greedy SOB who have and will never admit to wrongdoing. Therefore, it cannot move "honestly, nor upon good faith. We must demand resignations.

FYI the qualified candidates will not apply since its a known deal and the city commission will hire one of their boys to do a inferior job just like cabler did for the last mmm 20 plus years adios. God help the city of Brownsville, heard that some lopez guy has the job wrapped up already, really? I hope not. .

Anonymous 5:48 AM, setting aside many things I know of and can prove, and setting aside a personal note, and as a professional, Pete should be reassigned or retire. The reason being, Pete was and probably still is very close to the past management that has done a lot of damage administratively and the city as a whole. People not connected to past management must evaluate with fresh eyes, enforce policy and procedures in place that is good, implement new ones to improve administration and work with the commission to restore transparency, ethics, and implement the policy set by the commission, as management should regardless of personal feelings.

Good can come out of all this by all agreeing to make the city the agenda. The past is done, cannot be changed, but we can make it better without vindictiveness, but work in a professional manner that allows people to resign and retire that need to resign or retire without looking to prosecute those who carryied out orders, unless theft was committed.

Hopefully this commission understands their limitations and hire a professional firm to do a national search for our next city manager. To not do this will lead to the same of the past, with a puppet manager and continued economic loss to our city.

This is ridiculous - how in Gods name are we entrusting the same people who commit all the corruption to search for a City Manager and Attorney?

Its like asking El Chapo, Al Capone, John Gotti, El SeƱor de los Cielos to vet for a decent, honest hard working Attorney General.

The same people who took 13 years to fire Charle Cabler, the same people who took 10 years to fire Sossi. Its unbelievable.

Its disgraceful.

CAN WE ONCE MORE TRUST THE "SAME MIX OF CITY COUNCIL" TO SIT ON 2 TASK FORCES THAT WILL SELECT A CITY MANAGER & CITY ATTORNEY ? WHO ON THE CITY COUNCIL WILL BE COMPETENT AND "OBJECTIVE" IN THE SELECTION PROCESS ? YOU HAVE COMMISSIONERS THAT STILL WANT TO PLEASE THE MAYOR, A SITTING RACIST COMMISSIONER, COMMISSIONERS WHO HAVE ARREST RECORDS, COMMISSIONERS WHO SUPPORTED THE PREVIOUS DISGRACED CITY MANAGER AND CITY ATTORNEY.

I AGREE ....GET A PROFESSIONAL GROUP THAT WILL PROVIDE THE RIGHT RECOMMENDATIONS FOR A "PROFESSIONAL CITY MANAGER" AND AN ETHICAL CITY ATTORNEY (THE PREVIOUS CITY ATTORNEY ALREADY HAD BAGGAGE COMING IN). THE CITY MANAGER WAS A CANDIDATE THAT WAS REJECTED FOR POLICE CHIEF AND WAS NOT A PROFESSIONAL CITY MANAGER, WITH QUALIFYING EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS AND QUALIFYING EXPERIENCE IN OPERATING A MUNICIPALITY THE SIZE OF BROWNSVILLE. THE CITY MANAGER WAS NICE GUY WHO CATERED TO THE WISHES OF THE COMMISSION.

WE SHOULD ASK OURSELVES: WHAT WOULD McALLEN, EDINBURG OR HARLINGEN DO ?

The city commissioners and Mayor already have their guy pick for the new city manager. The problem here in Brownsville IS THE SIX city commissioners are the six blind mice of stupidity

I wonder what that St. Joe putito from across the river, De Leon, will do if an African-American applies for City Attorney....hummnn...interesting.

The mayor and commission have already picked Eddie Campirano, they are just going through the motions. This will be a mistake, Eddie is part of the compadrismo and will be a lap dog to the mayor.

Pat Ahumada for city manager. He will save Brownsville

Somebody wants to pick up another 20k dollar check to deposit in their personnel account. House mouse Pete "I can't pass the CPA test" Gonzalez is the perfect administrator to do this. He's done it before and will do it again. How he got away with this is beyond believe. No investigation no indictment. Do it again Pete Shit.

Campirano and Gonzalez together will break the city. Their first act together is to go visit China and then Colombia.

Anonymous said...

A racist, a non-resident of BV, and an alleged bedfellow of the last city attorney going to pick the next one, yeah, that's agreat idea.

Anonymous said...

Pete Shit and let me kiss your ass Campirano make a great couple but not at city hall.

In my opinion Pete Shit and let me kiss your ass Campirano will have Pat sleeping in the middle.
That's only my opinion.

In response to Anonymous 8:26 PM, October 27, 2017 and to all those who care about our city. I know that I could do a better job that what we had as city manager, but I recognize my limitations. This position calls for a true professional who is an independent thinker, who will not be intimidated and can guide our city to fullfill its' potential.

It is my hope, we do not repeat the same as we have done before, by hiring a city manager based on personal agendas, but based on experience and qualifications. If I were on the commission, I would insist on hiring a firm to do a search for a qualified person that has h a degree that includes urban planning, a minimum 15 years experience managing a border city comparable to Brownsville or larger, preferable bilingual and can balance a going green effort to bring economic development to our city. The candidate's resume has to show results where he/she has been manager with good references.

I know I could do a better job as a city manager than what we had and would make a good interim manager to put the city back on track and I would not even ask for a salary, but the commission would never except or handle any backlash. If I were interim, I would deliver a plan that provides direction, transparency, ethics and results to reduce expenses and increase revenues, reassign those who need to be rassigned, retire those who need to retire and eliminate positions not needed, but that is something politicians cannot handle. Politicians cannot handle NO or independent thinkers, some want puppets, which is what is not needed now. It would take me 7 months to put this city on track, which hopefully by that time a good professional would be hired. Since, me being interim, hopefully they can appoint someone who has the courage to make the city the agenda, because what we have is the same as to what we had.

Thank you Anonymous 8:26 PM

Ufff! Esta cabron!

The city manager's office would have to relocate to the local jail....as the wishful interim seems to be a regular there.

They would also have to issue the interim an animal control vehicle with a ladder in the event a rescue comes up. The vehicle would have to come with a driver just in case the interim's drivers license is suspended.

On top of that, they would have to assign someone to conduct double and triple reviews on city checks; to make sure they don't mysteriously appear in the interim's bank account.

He would also need a full security detail as the good interim cannot accept responsibility and is paranoid that EVERYONE is "out to get" him.
