(Ed.s Note: Ah, the good old days when men were men, women remained women, and a lone border sheriff with a M-16 could stave off the marauding drug gangs from across the Rio Grande. We had the opportunity to have been working for the county when Sheriff Alex Perez patrolled the river with his trusty metraca at his side. To think that Perez, who started off as a baker (panadero), and then got himself elected a justice of the peace would one day achieve the heights of greatness that earned him the attention of the national media would have been unimaginable back then.
But stranger things have happened in Cameron County and will probably happen again, and again...and again. Fortunately for Perez (and for us), he retired as sheriff without getting indicted or arrested for the usual sins that border sheriffs have been nabbed such as drug running or taking bribes from drug cartels, although plenty of rumors circulated way back then in 1985.
The caption below the metraca-toting sheriff says that Alex had ordered M-16s and Uzis for his men so they could battle the desperadoes from across. As far as we know, no running gun battles ever ensued when Da Man Alex was on his watch. Note also that the photog credited with Alex's photo is none other then Mickey Torres, a friend of ours who once worked for the Brownsville Herals when it used to be a newspaper. Have we ever been given an update of the Cameron County sale of computers with tax records or other personal citizens information. County used computers sold at auction and ended up being sold at the flea market. While we a talking about the county, what is going on with the fajita fraud and who is really responsible, if anyone, for oversight at the detention center. Probably other things under that county carpet, but can't think.
Why are you digging up bones instead of continuing to keep the pressure on Cesar Deleon? He brings shame to our city and yet you continue to drag Elizondo through the mud and the Mayor. Do our town some good and help get Deleon out.

I have known Alex for many, many years and I like him. He is a man like the rest of us and a native this part of the world, for better or worse. I used to listen to the stories that my students used to tell me when someone brought him
into the classroom as a guest speaker. True or not, the kids knew where they could go get the stuff or help sell it. They would say, "Es de los mismos, ma'am!" They said the same about Conrado.
So much bullshit. I guess everyone knew more than the FBI,DEA,U.S.CUSTOMS,IRS,TEXAS RANGERS, CAMERON COUNTY TASK FORCE & BROWNSVILLE POLICE. MAYBE THEY DIDN'T HEAR THE RUMORS.
Sheriff Alex was in the hospital several times during his tenure as sheriff.He was in for the "Pelada De Vergar" from all the Law Enforcement officials & Drug Lords trying to ruin his career. Ha ha!!
