The 2nd Annual Downtown Brownsville Halloween Pub Crawl wants one day to rival Sombrero Fest, the Brownsville Beer Fest and other activities that will bring the community back downtown. Saturday night promises to be a blast as revelers sweep the streets in their costumes.
With lessons learn from their inaugural undertaking, WorkPub Coworking owner Luis Urquieta has high expectations for this year's festivities. His business at the corner of 9th and Elizabeth will serve as the headquarters for the pub crawl.
"Terra's Bar & Grill has spearheaded the effort, but El Hueso de Fraile, the Half Moon Saloon, the Library at La Rioja, the Kraken, the Historic Palm Lounge and the Spanish Moon have jumped on the bandwagon and everyone is extremely enthusiastic," said Urquieta.
"This is going to be our French Quarter Night," continued Urquieta. "The weather should be crisp which makes for the perfect walking experience. And all these night spots are only a few minutes from each other.
"We are working hard to change downtown's image. The old image is a myth, but there is still a large segment of our society that can't let go of those old images when cantinas, prostitutes, transvestites, homeless and other low-lifes ruled downtown.
"Downtown is safe, well-lit and well-patrolled. The time has come to embrace rather than reject downtown. The days of shrimpers returning after 40 days and nights at sea and tearing up the town are gone. The cantinas are gone. We are entering a new epoch."
The bar crawl's promoters stressed these important points: The Kickoff Party starts at eight in the evening at the WorkPub Coworking.
There will be a series of steps for those participants who want to enjoy the bar crawl to its fullest:
Step 1: Pick up your stamp card during the kickoff party at WorkPub Coworking between eight and 10 in the evening. Stay for craft beer sampling and appetizers.
Step 2: Start crawling and enjoy the Halloween spirit in Historic Downtown Brownsville. To complete the pub crawl, you must collect a stamp from every participating bar.
Step 3: You made it! Once you have collected all stamps, come back and visit each establishment. Present your completed stamp card and you will receive a discount from each of the participating bars.
Bonus: Get 15% off your entire purchase at Resaca City Liquor in Olmito when you present your completed stamp card.
"I'm stoked," smiled Urquieta. "We are going to have an unforgettable night."
