FORMER CUMMINGS MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS REMEMBER...

(Ed.'s Note: Following our post on the changing of Brownsville Independent School District's Cummings Middle School to the Brownsville Learning Center, we had an outpouring of comments from former students, teachers and parents of those who attended or taught there.

This photo was sent in by one of them which he titled "The Cummings Old Guard 1961," a staff of teachers and administrators. They are identified as:

Top left to right: P. Taylor, B. Witaker, E. Manzano, A. Machado, C. Jackson.

Bottom l to r: K. Bader, L. Rentfro, B. Ping, Z. Sebern and E. Putegnat

Manzano went on to become the principal at Cummings for many years until his retirement.)

Mrs. Machado had her own fingernail parlor in her classroom.
Miss Bader had a screw driver in her hand to remove the shoe spikes the boys would wear.
Mr. Manzano could never replace Mrs. Stell so he was moved to Pace.
Mrs. Pam Taylor was the young secretary who now fights the Homeland Security people.
But because we all behaved, we had a good time and somehow learned.
We were classified as 7H1 and 7H2 and etc like the bluebirds and blackbirds 7L1 and 7L2
like we did not know what the h and the l stood for. But we learned regardless.

Ms. E Putegnat always greeted us with "Great Day in the Morning". She always encouraged us to read and read we did. Excellent teacher.

Hate to say this but Manzano and Machado were the "Uncle Tom" at this school. All very good teachers but went with the flow.
