TO KBRO: CHARLES STILLMAN DECLARES SLAVE IN CENSUS

"In 1854, Chisum moved to Denton County where he settled on Clear Creek, three miles above the town of Bolivar. He soon went to work for a large rancher as a cowboy and started to develop his own herd. It was during this time that Chisum purchased a mulatto slave girl named Jensie from some emigrants bound for California. The girl was just 15 years old and beautiful and Chisum began a love affair with her. The couple had two daughters. He also freed his slaves at onset of Civil War. Check link or Google it. https://www.legendsofamerica.com/we-johnchisum/

Show proof that Stillman had slaves, please." on IN CUERO, A CHISHOLM TRIAL MUSEUM. IN BROWNSVILLE, NADA

(Ed.'s Note: The graphic above is from the 1860 census of Cameron County and shows that besides Brownsville founder Stillman, his lawyer Steven Powers, river boat captain and future owner of the King Ranch Richard King, and someone named Cummings, among others listed slaves among their possessions.

(Click on graphic to enlarge.)

Now, Stillman was a Connecticut Yankee,  King was from New York, and Powers was from Maine, but all three supported secession to maintain the system that was making them rich. The Civil War – the war between brothers – made them rich running the Union blockade with smuggled southern cotton through Matamoros.

We are going to suggest that the Jeff Davis memorial stone be placed on the lawn of the Stillman House on Washington Street. Birds of a feather...)

There is no question that King, Kennedy, Yturria and Stillman made tons of money off the Civil War. Perhaps it was just good business, but in Stillman's case it was crookedness of the highest order. Stillman bought large quanities of the cotton that came down the "Cotton Road", supposedly for his mills in Monterrey. In deed Stillman did send some of the cotton into Mexico, but much more was shipped to New York to be sold to the Union Army for the purposes of making uniforms. Stillman made such high profits that he became one of the richest men in America at the time.

Now Juan and I will never agree about the causes of the Civil War. I had three lineal ancestors that fought in Texas regiments of the Confederate Army. I can tell you for a fact that none of them fought for the institution of slavery. They fought because there was an invading army coming toward their homes and farms.

It is precisely because I hold Confederate views (not about slavery, I detest the practice then and now), that I consider Stillman a traitor, crook and charlatan of the highest order. He traded with the enemy to enrich himself and that makes him the lowest of the low. If the South had won their independence, he most certainly would have been hung as a traitor.

Please note that Stillman, Yturria and others in the ring, fled to France for a year or two after the war and only returned when they thought the coast was clear.

When folks assert that he stole the land on which Brownsville sits, I have no problem believing that. When it is asserted that he used young women on his ranch, I have no problem believing that either. A man of such low character will stoop to anything to gain what he wants.

On this one point, I think Gringos, Latinos, Pro-Confederate and Anti-Confederate people can all agree. Charles Stillman was a terrible human being. He was by far the worse of the lot.

That thing is too small to read.

Blame the slavery issue on the slave traders...because of slavery, blacks had no problems in finding employment. With this, they also secured room and board as well...they were better off in the slave enviroment than what they left behind...ha! ha!

Okay I see - according to this document one 60 year old mulatto woman was a fugitive of the state and she had servant quarters? Francis Cummings was probably also a slave owner so we have some names of schools to change.... By the way Belden also had a slave girl so we need to rename Belden Trail. What else? The records I had seen previous to this indicate Stillman transported two young slave girls on at least two occasions. His wife Elizabeth and best friend's wife Helen Chapman were understandably opposed to slavery. Charles Stillman's attitude was to be indifferent about it.

The name is Franklin Joseph Cummings for which the school was named after - the first principal and supt in Brownsville.

If you can notice Richard King had 135 female Mexican salve fugitives from the sate, Charles Stillman had 160 female Mexican slave fugitive from the state, and J. Jones had 120 Male Mexican slaves from the state, these were not just black. Maybe they had the Mexican female to sew the uniforms. Stillman was not just a master to the black, but also to Mexican women.
