(Ed.'s Note: Tonight's the night for the public to voice their opinion on whether the City of Brownsville should remove the Jefferson Davis Memorial (Stone) from Washington Park to another location or leave it where it is. The memorial used to be located at the corner of Palm Boulevard and Elizabeth Street until the intersection was widened.
Following the national trend, local activists are calling for its removal to a museum or other place less prominent than Washington Park. Conversely, supporters of the monument say the stone should remain where it's at because it is a part of local history, like it or not.
The monument was donated to the city in 1926 by the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Davis was the President of the Confederate States of America. After it was defaced, the Texas division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans Sixth Brigade offered a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators. So far, there have been no takers.
The Town Hall meeting will be held at 6 p.m. tonight at the Brownsville Events Center. Let's see how members of the city commission show up.)

Do we think anyone in the city government reads our comments. Tony Martinez probably has someone read it for him and then tell him sweet things about how we love him. Does Cesar de Leon believe that his racism and bigotry endears him to the public, or does he think his "weak apology" is OK and he should continue, as a racist, to make policy for the city. At the same time we should move or hide a rock in Washington Park which has never said a racist word as de Leon has. We should focus on riding the city of living racists before we hid rocks which have stood for longer than our lifetime, and have never spoken a racist word. Cesar de Leon is a wart on our city and to allow him to stay on the city commission is worse than the Jefferson Davis plaque.
