(Ed.'s Note: We don't know if local blogger Jerry McHale was writing tongue-in-cheek, but his McHale Report.blog has decided that Rivera High School football coach – and Brownsville Independent School District trustee "Coach" Joe Rodriguez's protege – has earned top plaudits from the shadowy STJA as the Athletic Director for 2017.
Now, Jerry (AKA The Peerless Observer) being a loyal sort (as the Irish are capriciously so), we imagine that it is a tip of the hat to Coach Joe, a man who took both Chavez and Jerry under his now-feeble wing. Rodriguez has called Chavez the "winningest coach" in Brownsville football and paved the way for him in the BISD and when Jerry was in hot water with his Rocinante rag Coach Joe would step in and calm the roiling waters.
Now, with Coach Joe tottering to and fro, it may be Jerry's salute to his benefactor.
We can respect that, we guess, but it would be hard to ask that from the Rivera student body or the parents and staff of the River 9 to stand up and cheer the dismal 1-8 record. After all, the one victory was against lowly Porter High School (with a 0-9 W-L record) down Highway 48 toward Matamoros. (Last week Porter lost to Mercedes 54-0.) From there on it has been downhill fast for Rivera.
This calls into question whether the millions that Coach Joe has thrown Chavez's way in the form of a $2.5 million 3/4 size indoor football practice field and state-of-the-art indoor training facility complete with expensive weight room have done any good. Now Rivera is getting one of four soccer fields outfitted with the fake turf for nearly $1 million.
But Rivera's next opponent may be the silver lining Coach Chavez has been waiting to vindicate his reputation and proven performance as football coach. Both teams have a 0-8 records so it should be a pretty even match, a cliffhanger and nail biter, to be sure. Coming off drubbings by Weslaco (72-0) and Weslaco East (42-7), Rivera fans could be in for victory over fellow basement dweller Harlingen South. Chavez should shine. Chavez will have to dip into his treasury of vast gridiron experience and pigskin guile to pull off the upset.)

It is time for Coach Joe to step aside and promote the sports that attract attention: Soccer is the real sport in which BISD shines, yet football still gets the money and the facilities. Time to pay soccer coaches and other coaches more. Some football players make it to the next level, but seldom with any teams we have heard of. Basketball.....face it, some of the girls are taller than the boys. The upper valley has wrestling...why not BISD??? Time to make the teams earn the money the sport received. Coach Joe knows nothing but football and should leave the scene along with Chavez.
short, stumpy and slow Mexicans never gonna win. Not built for football.
Joe and chavez have have a monopoly
They pass up good coaches for explayers of theirs just because they hang out at c and c wings and drink together. That Uresti kid is lost at Porter but just cause he played for Chavez he got the job. Starkey had great assistants that deserve head coaching jobs but just because they are not from the Brownsville zest pool, how and Chavez pass them up!
The only reason veterans is winning is because they manipulate the student numbers to keep them aT 5A. Veterans wouldn't stand a chance at 6A.
Sorry but Chavez needs to know when its time to hang your boots and enjoy life .People in Brownsville tend to have to much pride sometimes overstaying their positions and not letting the younger up and coming coaches step in or bring in new talent its a shame. These kids only have a couple of yrs in high School to prove something and some of these coaches have been trying to prove something for over 30 yrs and haven't done it MOVE THE HELL OUT OF THE WAY!! You all think Joe Rodr is a legend gtfoh he didn't do shit it makes me laugh when i see people kissing his ass.
They kiss it because he is the godfather of BISD athletics. They don't kiss it because of what he failed to accomplish
Rene Medrano should be the AD of the BISD. Talk about a real deal kind of person with integrity. Medrano would only offer jobs to people who have the credentials, resume, and experience. He'd over chances to coaches who could take all sport teams to the next level of the playoffs. That's the kind of guy they need! This, let me higher this guy because he;s my drinking partner or was my star when he played for me krap has got to stop.
God Father no mames! Yea you keep on kissing his ass and we all keep laughing at you.He failed the tax payers and their kids when you lose sight of education the teachers in the classroom and special needs kids and dept you are a failure. It's just a matter of time till all his conflicts of interest come to light. His boat got holes and not enough fingers to plug.
But they did beat Rivera...right
Chavez and Rodriguez were great - but unfortunately they will be remembered now for bringing in their former gal pal to destroy BISD
She is an albatross and their legacy is now SHIT
Yep
He was the "god father" to all those young women he ran around with, behind his spouse's back. He would pay their bills, buy them cars and even flaunt them around in public!
Wonder what his kids think about it that he did it to their mom publicly, I've heard the same
That's why veterans high is divided into two schools, keep the numbers low to play in very weak 5A district
You mean Rodriguez taught in school, I thought he just drank in school, coolers.
This is the most successful year in BISD football history. It has certainly cost Coach Tom Chavez at Rivera where he has had to divide his duties between the school and the district, but he has always been a team player. As athletic director, the BISD has never had four teams in the post-season. Based on this incontrovertible evidence, the South Texas Independent Journalists Association (STIJA) voted Chavez athletic director of the year. "It was both a remarkable and historical achievement," said STIJA President Anthony Starr. "I wholeheartedly agree with the selection," added Max Maxwell, dean of the RGV sportswriters.
That is correct.
STIJA MY ASS!!
South of San Antonio, 326A has four of the top ten rated high school football teams, none of them from Brownsville. For our Brownsville teams to have made the showing they have, I say that just goes to show all the naysayers including Jerry McHale. We need to get rid of the good ol' boy bosses and bring in some real coaches who want to play the game to win, not to manipulate the system for their own personal enrichment, but to WIN! Stop writing about the glory days of the past, live for the present, and plan for the future. Like a bad smell, hope all the old farts dissipate in the wind and just fade away.
But we really do need those indoor fields. You will see in the years to come how that investment really pays off in more ways than one.
That is how Porter 0 and 10 Coach Carlos Uresti got the job at Porter. There were way more qualified applicants for job and they Joe, Chaves give it to the proven good for nothing Uresti. He is a good for nothing type of individual who thinks his sh.. don't stink. He walks around like like he went 10 and 0. Something has to change with this hire. Offer Porter to Medrano, he will turn it around. Porter gas a great QB 9th grader who can be the difference but not with Uresti. He does not even have coaches, ge says he wants to hire qualified coaches, truth is nobody wants to work for that guy. He was recently observed talking ugly to some parents. Parents talk about their disgust towards him on the stands during games. He has his friend Gomez as Defensive Coordinator but has shown no ability to stop anybody. He stopped noone this year, with games with scores of up to 70 to 0. Basketball game scores. Uresti needs to go coach under his buddy Campos again to learn from a good coach. Kids dont play with heart for Uresti, they couldnt wait for season to end. When kids play like that no heart, no emotion because coach is no good in all sense of word, Injuries are prone to occur. Look how many kids got hurt. Get this kids a good head coach, don't discrimination because we are from poor side of town. We deserve better. Board members, yes even you Rodriguez, take your boy elsewhere, he is destroying what we thought was going to be a good team. Ask the coaches, they seem to hate him too. Our kids deserve better. Our school deserves better. Make Dean the head coach, please. Kids like him. Give us Beto Leal, give us coach guess, but this young coach needs out. Our kids are getting g hurt. Parents should sue for every injury that occurred due to this coach lack of ability to guide the team safely and correctly. He says he liked the 2ND QB that got injured, what u did he do for him. How. Did he protect him. He. Had great young QB last year, a 6.3 kid with tremendous arm, didn't play this year, why, a kid with so much potential, the answer is clear, the coaching or lack of it. Faulk wins, sends big group of kids, he looses them. What is board waiting for, Chaves and rodriguez you gave your boy a chance. He did not take advantage of it, replace him, but your ego aside and do it for the kids, the community and school.
No trae nada Coach Joe, he should retire once and for all.
Quit beating a dead horse with a stick. Only Chavez can get away with this 30 year capricious behavior. Football has taken this city nowhere yet soccer has put this city on the map nationally. You would assume some common sense. Not while Chavez is around..
