So we looked up our handy Spanish-English dictionary and found out that a padrón is actually a master list such as a voter registration or member list. Since that would make no sense to have a store named padrón, we figured it was a variant of Patrón, or boss. That made a little more sense, but still didn't ring quite right. So we tossed it around some of our local word smiths and hit upon the idea that the new owner considered himself a "papasote," or "muy padre," or "padrote" in the sense of La Mera Paipa, or the Main Squeeze.
Regardless of the language laboratory going on around that barrio, this is the Lopez Grocery replacement. We have seen the King Mart, the Saldaña Grocery Stores, Serrata's and other neighborhood Mom and Pop stores go by the wayside in Brownsville barrios. We welcome the new guy "El Padrón" to supply the people without cars or the inclination to drive all the way to the other Lopezes, HEBs or Walmarts blocks away."

It is also a last name, maybe the owner is El Padron because of the last name just like El Lopez, El Flores, El Gonzalez, etc.
Maybe Padron is the person's last name. El Villa Verda was the original name of the store where the children of La Poinsetta Housing Project would run to buy their chicle. You forgot to mention Limon's, Gaviitos, Dona Maria's, Don Santos, Don Felix, Dona Tencha, Dona Conchita who would see individual cigarettes, Dona Luisa and Honeydale as other stores who provided for the neighborhood using a "cartera" to buy on credit. Wow, and nobody used food stamps or Lone Star! We all worked for our papita! Thanks to all those people that helped the neighborhoods survive.
Juan, people, like me, from that barrio stiil refer to this store as the Villa Verde Food Store, which was the name of this store before it was sold to the Lopez family some 30 or so years ago. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
