CBS MONEYWATCH: HARLINGEN CHEAPEST PLACE TO LIVE

By CBS MoneyWatch
Harlingen, Texas

As the tough economic times continue in the U.S., many people are looking to cut down on their expenses by moving to more affordable cities and towns.

But where to go?

The Council for Community and Economic Research, a nonprofit group that provides information on local economic trends, recently compared the cost of living in 306 urban areas in the U.S. Based on the price of housing, utilities, grocery items, transportation, health care, and miscellaneous goods and services, here is a look at the least expensive cities around the country to live in.

The town with the nation's lowest cost of living is Harlingen, Texas, located in the state's southernmost tip and with a population of 74,950.

The after-tax cost to maintain a standard of living enjoyed by the average company manager or other professional is roughly 17 percent lower than the national average.

A pound of ground beef in Harlingen costs $2.35, compared with $3.30 nationally as of January, while a night out at the movies will run you $9. The average price of a home is $229,558.

(Now, that guy using the bus shelter in Brownsville as his personal domicile might argue with MoneyWatch on having his city left out.)

Coming in third is:
McAllen, Texas
The average cost of a home in McAllen, Texas, the third-least expensive community in the country, is $178,000, while a two-bedroom/two-bath apartment rents for $708.

The cost of living in McAllen, population of 130,831, is 16.2 percent cheaper than the national average.

Nombre El San Benito holds the DISTINCTION of the POOREST CITY IN TEXAS. Case in point just look at the CITY SKATE PARK AND SWIMMING POOL.

Come on Brownsville, we are way ahead in corruption and in substandard values . Our bike and hike trails are better than the streets in Brownsville for our automobiles. 80 percent of the people get food stamps and free housing and free money to get their medical supplies AKA as BEER. So Brownsville should be one number.

Thats what Im talking about!! You complain about more BUS stops but we can't even use the ones we have because they are used as a one bedroom studio apartment by the homeless.

So keep on building bike lanes.

Instead of complaining about the inept politicians that keep lining their pockets you complain about yourself and the state of the city and the homeless.

The only business they bring down here are stores that pay minimum wages and exploit the labor force. The local college only offers teaching degrees, all other degrees you need to leave the valley to find jobs.

Back in the 70's a group of Hispanic lawyers file a lawsuit against the state for not having higher level of educational institutions here in the valley. They won the case.

In the early 1900's the agriculture and farm barons refused to allow the state to offer higher education in this area. Why? So they would have a larger pool of labor to choose from. Big manufacturing companies did not choose the area because of lack of education among its citizens. Thanks to the local barons.

So who is to blame?
