LOPEZ TO BOLT BISD, SEEK SAFE HARBOR AT THE PORT
By Juan Montoya
From the coffee klatsch department: Brownsville Independent School District trustee (and now board president) Cesar Lopez will run for commissioner of the Brownsville Navigation District.
We sometimes sit next to tables at local coffee shops and restaurants and just happened to be sitting next to a bunch of political old timers when we overheard that Cesar Lopez had invited BND commissioner John Wood to coffee and talk.
Apparently, Lopez was feeling Wood out to see whether he was going to see reelection at the end of his four-year term in May.
Granted, Cesar has already held a fundraiser at $40 a pop for his reelection for the BISD, but it appears the heat in that kitchen is getting a mite warm for his comfort. What with all that hullabaloo over the spoiled barbacoa contracts, the continuing debacle over the 11-cent tax increase without going to the voters, with his buddy Joe Rodriguez hogging all the money for his sports palaces to relive his glory days, and the low morale of the teachers ans support staff there, we can hardly blame him.
So the fact that the port raised taxes for the first time in decades might probably not be a good issue for him, to raise against Wood.
But we digress.
There are already about four other candidates for the seat held by Carlos Masso, whose term also expires in May. The names of Esteban Guerra, Ernesto de Leon, Ernie Hernandez, and a woman named Priscilla Roca have been thrown around going for that spot.
So Lopez thinks that Wood may be vulnerable in some way.
From what we heard, Cesar was probing to see whether Wood had committed to run and told him that he was considering leaving the BISD to run for the port. When Wood gave some indication that he was, Lopez told him that he hoped it would be a a clean race.
Now Wood, who has been around the block once or twice in his political career as city and county commissioner (and even ran for county judge) before he ran for the port could not promise that.
"You know politics," he told Lopez. "If you have any skeletons in your closet, they will be brought out. And even if you don't, they'll make something up."
Lopez was appointed to fill the spot left vacant by Christina Saavedra in 2013 by the late Enrique Escobedo. Before that, he was a purchasing agent for the Mercedes ISD, having gone there after working in a similar position at the BISD. He the ran for office in 2014 against three candidates and – since it's a non-partisan, majority vote – won with 40 percent of the vote.
Now what is Lopez going to tell those supporters who gave him money at his fundraiser for reelection as a BISD trustee? And what would he bring to the table? He is also a representative of the TASBE Buy Board. Since his coming to the BISD, the district has leaned toward that more of procurement for its services, preferring to go without the benefit of bidding.
Valco, the company who sold $100,000s of barbacoa meat and Paragon, the company that has installed artificial turf in district schools to the tune of nearly $6 million were both members of the By Board, also called a cooperative purchasing pool. Is he eyeing the port's purchases as well?

I’m voting for Cesar and so is my fam
lopez was feeling wood out.... another gem, montoya
Bud light and booze in the picture where was Rene?
Guerra and Masso have businesses and the deep pockets and family name well known on the other side of the river. Priscilla (foxy btw) grew up at the port in her family's business there. Ernie and Ernesto Deleon are long time political wolves. Cesar like disgraced commissioner Cesar de Leon said "es un muerto de hambre" who refuses to earn money the old fashion way and is always looking for a quick buck on the side. Good luck to this KID. Le van a comer el lonche!!!!
Good riddance will NOT be missed!!!
What is in the name Cesar? Omen? One runs scared and the other sticks to his guns and doesn't resign. One did wrong but the other has not had anything pointed at him for real except for the Escobedo link and possibly the BBQ. Voters study this carefully. Oh, I see it also happens with the name Sylvia. What gives??? Nothing else to do this Sat. evening so decided to research corruption in Brownsville but it is hard to find resources or anything besides the RrunRrun. Keep it coming Juan.
y rice and beans? Is it open or did closed down after the fajita bust?
The sewer rats of Erin Hernandez, corrupt former justice of the peace, and Cesar Lopez, corrupt current BISD board member, are looking to milk the port for big money kickbacks. No to both these sewer rats!
R.A.T.A.
Pinche Rata de dos
The port has been controlled too long by the same interest and the same people
Lopez did good by pushing for expanded early childhood and supporting the building of band halls at pace and porter —- those two band programs had outgrown their old band halls years ago.
If he can transfer that same vision to the port we’d be better off —
New blood new vision for the port is my belief
Was Lopez dating the BISD Purchasing clerk, a fling?? Now that is more interesting?
They use the BISD board for their own pockets and interests. They walk around town demanding respect and admiration. Puras ratas y tranzas. We need more investigative reporting in this town....folks?
What does this pendejo no about the port.
He was under the table drunk as a skunk and feeling some wood.
Cesar the FBI IS LOOKING at you !!
FBI TAKE HIM IN !
He's trying to get out before the FBI nails him.
Well than you are a pendejo if you vote for Cesar... and your family too.
RATA INC. better to go rob the port of Brownsville-its easy like the tipotex commercial says, then the BISD elite rings-that's harder or more work
People who talk about Mrs. Presas are envious, great leader who truly believed in helping students and defending us always. A tenacious woman whom I recall voting against the corrupt and standing strong in doing right! I use to work in BISD and witnessed Mrs. Presas talking to our students and motivating them to exhale and not give up... Leaders of her caliber are needed in order to make sure we have a "True Voice" when it comes to the real challenges. I moved to San Antonio and Brownsville Politics are the WORST!!! I hope Brownsville realizes the School Board should consist of people who really care and have no personal self interest. Unfortunately people from Brownsville have ELECTED thieves and sorry ass idiots.. I hope in November of this year people realize the infestation of CORRUPTION beginning with Superintendent Zendejas who knows Cesar Lopez was involved with the Barbacoa purchase and his abuse of power... Zendejas knows Carlos Elizondo is worthless, Zendejas knows Joe Rodriguez is a crook , Zendejas knows why Sylvia Atkinson was removed and how Baltazar, Carlos, Joe & Cesar supported to get rid of Atkinson.. I would visit the BISD main building and everyone knew the truth behind Atkinson leaving... Hiring of another Attorney to play Baltazar & Cesar Lopez game is called and ABUSE OF POWER!!!
I'm happy I no longer pay BISD Taxes I love paying Taxes in San Antonio, Texas where I don't get screwed as bad....
They are old friends. She brought him into the district years ago as a clerk. Then he latched on to Dr escobedo before leaving to mercedes district and landing escobedo huge contracts. Escobedo repaid him by giving him Christian's empty seat and from there his ambitions took off. Way to go Sandy.
Sucks that you don't get screwed. Sound like personal problem.
Say hi to Dr. Carl Montoya in San Antonio !
we miss him !!
Anonymous at 5:14 Speaking of "personal problems ".....why don't you go back and read the above posting again and see if you can understand it ?
The difference between Montoya and the current Supt is easy
Dr Montoya was decent to his staff
And he didn’t lead from the top down
Cesar sucks !
Montoya didn't lead a f thing. He let Sylvia Atkinson all his duties and he sat back and collect the fat check. Tell me one new initiative that Montoya brought to the district. He was a good man because he let everything slide and could care less as long as he got his money.
Ask the people in Judson about Montoya!!!!!
I need some help inhaling and exhaling

To me it sounds as you got screwed by BISD, but not as bad in San Antonio.
I hoped you enjoyed BOTH screws, regardless the amount you paid.
