Well, now we guess the wild rumors that we heard have turned out to be true.
Someone we thought was lying told us excitedly that there had been a campaign rally for Democratic Party candidates Lali Betancourt who's running against Sylvia Garza-Perez for Cameron County Clerk and Rigo Bocanegra running for County Commissioner for Precinct 2 in the March 6 primary.
Apparently the event took place in Santa Rosa this Saturday and was plastered all over the Internet by numerous people.The delicious rumor was that the two candidates and their supporters (which by the way includes Mario Saenz, the brother of Luis V. Saenz, Cameron County District Attorney) have pledged their support for former county judge Carlos Cascos, who is a Republican running unopposed in his party's primary.
(D.A. Saenz, by the way, supported his former Public Integrity Unit supervisor Victor Cortez for sheriff against Democrat Omar Lucio. He got trounced, of course, but this goes a bit deeper than it appears.)
Confused? So were we.
Now, we know that Mario has evolved into a politiquero par excellence and has had a hand in shaping several local elections. And the Betancourts have been yellow-dog Democrats since the late Adolfo Betancourt ran for office way back when. In fact, Mario s running for precinct chairman where he votes. What gives here?
David, for example, is the Cameron County Treasurer and ran as a Democrat. Laura, his sister, is also a candidate in this year's election, and is also running in the Democratic Party primary.
Are we to assume that "Team Saenz" has parted ways with the party at least on the general election, if not the primary? After all, there is only one other Republican race on the ballot with local candidates, and that is the Texas School Board Of Education race between Tad Hasse and Eric Garza.
It appears that blood is thicker than mud, as Sly Stone used to sing. But it makes us wonder, as Costello used to ask: Who's on first?
Then someone reminded us that it was Saenz who swore in Cascos the last time he won the race for county judge before accepting Gov. Greg Abbott's appointment as Texas Secretary of State?
Democratic County Chair Amber Medina tell your secretary to comb through your files to see if the two candidates and the DA signed the loyalty pledge to support Democrat candidates. On the other hand, that shade of gray might make you look attractively mature.
And to think that this is the home county of the Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa, a Cascos nemesis. We'd ask to see if his hair turned gray but it might be hard to get a sufficient sample to tell.

A politiquero is someone that gets hired and paid to perform. Mario is a true community activist that works and supports candidates without getting paid that he feels are the best choice for our County. Unlike other corrupted politicians that hire as many politiqueras to do their work such as Joey Lopez, Eddie Treviño and Sylvia Garza Perez.
Mario is a paid politiquero and his brother turns his back on this fact. Check campaign reports and you will see he is being paid to endorse many of the candidates that he claims he supports because they are the better candidate. The better candidate or the highest paying candidate? The DA and his family should not be endorsing any political candidates as it raises a question of how are these candidates going to pay them back if they win the race? Cascos has my vote, but Lali is a different story, she's a pawn to remove Sylvia for not bending for Luis. Wake up people, Mario only backs those who pay him and will be indebted to him and his brother.

He has openly supported and has help elect the following candidates with no pay at all officials like Judge Juan Magallanes, Judge Gloria Rincones, Judge Sheila Bence, College Board members Ruben Herrera, Dr.Tony Zavaletta and other candidates through out Cameron County. Not everyone has a need or desire to run for office. I can only imagine thw challenge of running a campaign. But if you look at both candidates and speak to them and listen to what they have to say, you have Lali who seems committed to helping the community . Lali is inspired of going in there and doing a good job. Talking to Sylvia it is so obvious, she is a narcissist who is looking to better her political career. The way her staff acts and the picture of that girl giving everyone the finger, Sylvia is not capable of controlling one little office. Now being a leader starts at home. If she can't control her marriage and bites the hand of the person who helped her like her husband. She isn't capable of doing good for the county. A person who thinks someone might actually be jealous of Sylvia lives in a make believe workd. A clerk is a clerk. You seem to think she is the vice President of the United States. By reading her push card, she simply has a Bachelor degree. She isn't special looking. She definately isn't brilliant. Why would ANYONE be jealous of her? When the county Clerk staff is receiving Five Star Ratings from the state,during Sylvia's tenure, that's a non issue for me.
These seem to be Lali's only reasons for running.
1. Lali is a Betancourt and their family members are born to be elected officials in Cameron County.
2. Lali has said according to Mario Saenz that his poll he conducted that 75 % of the county Clerk staff HATES Sylvia.

Sylvia has nearly 30 years of community service. Sylvia has been serving her community way before running for any office. So when you say "Lali seems committed", Sylvia was and has been committed to the people of Cameron County.
So Lali is "inspired" to go in there and do a good job? Sylvia has already gone in and done a GREAT job. You of course will deny that, but the proof is there. In the last 39 years the county clerks office has had 3 FIVE STAR ratings from state. Guess what, all 3 are during Sylvia's first three years.
