BUS RIDERS STAND ENDURING RAIN NEXT TO $ MILLION TRAIL

By Juan Montoya
In what has become an embarrassing scene to city residents, this middle-aged woman waits for a Brownsville Urban System (BUS) bus as she gets pelted by a cold, steady rain on Elizabeth Street, the city's main drag.

We stopped and talked to her and got an earful.

Apparently, she is waiting for a bus to go to Valley Regional Hospital. We asked her why she was waiting on the bus that would take her to the bus terminal (excuse us, La Plaza at Brownsville Multimodal Terminal) downtown on International Blvd., instead of waiting on the other side of the street for a bus to take her in the hospital's direction.

"The bus coming from the other direction toward the hospital doesn't stop here," she said. "We have to go to the terminal and then get on the bus to go there. That bus passes right through here, but we can't get on it here because it doesn't stop. We pass right by here when we get on that bus."

In fact, Metro routes maps show that that bus stops on Washington and Palm Blvd. and then on Central Blvd,. and Elizabeth. The next stop where riders can board it is at Boca Chica and Elizabeth near Military Highway.
Riders from West Brownsville have to walk from their homes to these two stops to get aboard the bus. In the past, BUS administrator Norma Zamora has said the limited stops heading out of the downtown area were made to improve "efficiency."

Ironically, the woman was standing a distance from the bus sign (barely visible if you follow the tip of her umbrella) next to a building because it was the only shelter (aside from her umbrella) where bus riders could take shelter from the rain. When she spots the return bus coming, she said she walks at a fast clip to the bus stop down the sidewalk to board it.

"The only stop that has a shelter on my route is the one that is at the corner of Central Blvd. and Boca Chica," she said from under her umbrella. "I used to live in McAllen and they have shelters there. But not here."

The priorities of this city were further made clear by the fact that not far from where the woman stood is the almost always empty hike and bike trail behind the demolished Model Laundry that runs behind Sams Stadium. The city has spent – and continues to spend – millions of dollars to construct them as part of commissioner Rose Gowen's "active tourism" plan. To add insult to injury, the woman under the umbrella complained of the prices bus riders have to pay.

"Here they charge you $1 to ride the bus and have to stand in the rain to wait for the bus," he said. "In McAllen, the bus costs only 50 cents."

How can she?
She likely has a border crossing card.
Works as a house keeper.
Makes twenty dollars a day.
Will buy groceries at H.E.B. downtown before returning to Mexico.
INS allows thousands or poor people into Brownsville as tourist.
HEB downtown would collapse without them.
If she's lucky she might even score some nice stuff from a second hand store.
Maybe a nice pair of shoes for her little girl. Or an extra blanket from Good Neighbor.
BLESSED ARE THE MEEK, FOR THEY WILL INHERIT THE EARTH.
Pray.

I just love how comments say that a person at a bus stop is from Mexico. There are A LOT of Brownsville residents, born in Brownsville (some in other USA states) that DO NOT know or care to drive a car. Some DO NOT have the money to keep and maintain a car. LOCAL, RETIRED people use the public transportation system. What a bunch of IGNORANT, POOR SORE LOSERS that their thoughts are based on the bias opinion of their individual "bad" luck.
If they hate Brownsville or its residents so much, move up north where you will "blend in" with the white anglo majority and a job, high salary and a brand new car will be waiting for you so you won't have to use public transportation.

Yeah but Norma Zamora gets a take home vehicle. She should be riding the BUS!

I bet if this lady would call Jessica Tatru she would go pick her up and take her to wherever she is going. She loves to give rides to people. Or maybe la chiscada de Zavaleta will lend her a bike.

Ever thought of giving them a lift home instead of taking pictures to make money off your ad revebuw, Juan Montoya?

We can't make a bus system that is "convenient" to every citizen. On a rainy day, someone gets wet. Juan, go to a major city and you will see that most bus stops aren't covered and buses don't stop at every corner.

juan I heard that Norma Zamora lives in McAllen? so if the reader from 7.28 pm is correct that she gets a city vehicles, does that mean she drives it all the way to McAllen everyday? just thought I ask? Please look into this and let your readers know.

Every person riding the bus in the south area gets wet while the bike trails that nobody uses has bike trail shelters and benches. The only difference here is that the elitist riding bikes decide to use the bike trails (which is once a month) don't get wet if it rains, while the majority of the bus riders get wet because of a lack of bus shelters. Mind you they pay for the bus ride while the ELITIST DON'T PAY FOR THE USE OF THE TRAILS. Both the Metro Bus and the bike trails are funded by taxpayers monies.

I run the trails often. Sometines i salute or hold.brief conversations with other pedestrians. Most of the commuters on the trails would still walk to work or school if there were no trails. The trails have done little to lure the educated, well to do, and professionals to go green. Have yet to see a college student using the trail to commute. I see fast food restaurant employees and dishwashers as well as public school students, that dont want to ride the free transportation provided because they " would have to wake up too early" as they often tell me. I am not an elitist, yes I have a salaried career, but ive been jogging since before we had trails.

The problem is that when the city commissioners are to award funding for shelters or benches or improvements to the bike trails the elitist in their fancy clown uniforms show up only to support la chiquiada only to show support and impress the rest of the dumb commissioners. They never use the bike trails those monies should be used for badly need improvements in the city.

I hope that you never fall on hard times, as not only Mexicans ride the bus. I hope that the bus passes you by every time it rains
