If you remember the mess on the part of Brownsville Independent School District administration and Athletic Director Tom Chavez that resulted in the dashing of the Brownsville Rivera Raider baseball team hopes of going to the District 32-6A baseball playoffs, an item in Monday's special meeting of the board of trustees should be of interest to you.
There is an item on the board's agenda to hire a new BISD Athletic Director. It reads:
2. Recommend approval of probationary contractual personnel for the 2017-2018 school year - Administrator for Athletics - (Gilberto Leal). Subject to receipt of all outstanding documentation
If Leal's contract gets approved, this means that Chavez will go back to being a football coach. That's not altogether good news. since Chavez, trustee Joe Rodriguez, protege, has racked up an unimpressive 17-49 W-L record, or just above 25 percent.
But what we now hear is that the new hire, Gilberto Leal, formerly a Harlingen High School South, and currently offensive coordinator with San Benito, has had to overcome several embarrassments along the way.
Among those was a DWI he picked up in 2011 when he was removed as head coach and moved to a lesser administrative position in the sports department. After Harlingen he moved on to the Hidalgo ISD as a member of the football staff.
While with the Harlingen South Hawks, he racked up an equally unimpressive 2-23 W-L record. Before, in Mercedes, he had a better 25-18 record.
The San Benito Greyhounds, under coach D. Gomez, have compiled winning seasons the last four years with Leal as offensive coordinator. How much can be attributed to Leal is pure conjecture.
But we also hear that Leal is trustee "Coach" Joe's boy and that he hand-picked him as he did Chavez. If that is any indication, we're on for another disappointment to please Coach Joe.
Meanwhile, after we looked into the Chavez baseball team administrative debacle that kept them out of the playoffs, we are also learning that one of the reasons that Coach Joe's protege did not attend to the proper paperwork that could have prevented the team from forfeiting its games was because some of them had played for him in the football team as well.
If Chavez had stepped in on time and taken care of the matter, that would have also come to light.

As a result, the Rivera baseball team which was headed to the playoffs will not take the field and Harlingen is now in the playoffs as the 4th seed.
Despite tying with Weslaco for second in District 32-6A, Rivera (10-4) will not be playing.
"Rivera was told three to four weeks before the end of the season that some six players may have incomplete paperwork and that they should fix that," they said. "They were told not only once, but as many as four or five times and emails sent to the coach, the principal and finally AD Chavez. They did nothing."
Now we know why. Let's hope that Leal has learned his lessons with the teams that has coached up the Valley. But if he is under the tutelage of "Coach" Joe, we can only expect the same or worse.

Certainly, BISD still does criminal background checks before they hire someone? Now, please tell me where Coach Joe got so much power at BISD. He was fired twice by the district and he is still in here causing havoc. What in the world could Coach Joe have under his sleeve that won't permit him to ethically call it quits. The kids?
"If you remember"? WTF? You think we actually read every shitty post here? LOL
Give Lopez high school coordinator Pyle a chance!
Folks, come on, joe rodriguez and tom chavez, been at bisd for over 40 to 50 years more or less, glory days long gone coaches, long time camotes and raiders of the lost ark, had that coors beer distributorship for some time and now both are back at BISD, aren't these guys like 70-80 years old each one of them, maybe its time to be put out to pasture for both of them? smells like a sewer plant to me, adios mother fuckers, time to put out the trash.
Sports over academics, what a strange thing this is? Well, not really, as sports is the primary religion of the American people even here in Browntown.
Thinking of Browntown, I note that crime is down and employments is up here. All of this under the administration of the hated, dangerous, racist Donald Trump. Makes one wonder if the locals got it wrong about Trump?
So what's the big deal Pete shit over at the city has been there over 50 years and has applied for city manager. Call the FBI
But Pete is an ethical gentleman and maybe that is what we really need - for him to be in charge and not have to take any crap from anyone and stand up for his scruples. I am all for Mr. Gonzales as our city manager - maybe there is still hope for Brownsville.
That's why he released a 28k check oh you forgot and you say he is a scruples (un)? He got promoted for that with a BIG pay check. What's under the carpet needs to be brought out in public, and only the FBI can do that.
Juan hey I just remember from the Charro days parade, Tom chavez and joe rod since they both are a bunch of old farts can do los viejitos dance together o no? What a riot over at BID, Dram, Drama, Drama. And the band plays on or marches on? Onward thru the fog
