WOULD YOU WANT THE DRUNK SURGEON, OR THE SOBER ONE?

"Oliveira urged the audience to take his seniority and knowledge of the state Legislature into consideration. He said that even in the majority-Republican Texas House, he has been able to work across the aisle.

“If tomorrow one of your children or family members is told they need to have brain surgery, are you going to have an experienced brain surgeon who’s done hundred of surgeries or someone who just left medical school?” he said." Argument for his District 34 State Rep. candidacy by Rene O. Oliveira during a recent forum

By Juan Montoya
One expected Rene Oliveira, who's been at the District 34 position for the last 34 years, to use the the talking point of seniority when he was at a forum with his opponent Cameron County Pct. 2 Commissioner Alex Dominguez.

As usual, Oliveira said that Dominguez is a rookie and didn't know his way around Austin. Dominguez countered that Austin is out of touch with the Valley and the rest of the state and pointed out that Oliveira has never held public office locally before he was placed in his Austin seat.

But what was not even mentioned was the fact that Oliveira has just been involved in hit-and-run DWI where he slammed into a woman from behind, left the scene of the accident, had his current significant lie to the police, and refused to take a breath test. Neither was it pointed out by the moderators that this was not the first time that the imbibing rep had been involved in vehicular mishaps caused by his overindulgence in alcohol.

But we're used to the "ay, pero es muy buena gente" syndrome here to overlook the obvious: Oliveira has not only demonstrated "poor judgment" over the years with his drinking, but has also been forgiven for various "lapses" in judgment.

But let's use his analogy of the brain surgeon. Who would you feel more comfortable having as a surgeon if one of your family members is told they need to have brain surgery?

Would you want the guy with 34 years performing "hundreds" of surgeries (Oliveira), or someone who just graduated from medical school (Dominguez)?

If the experienced surgeon arrived at the hospital parking lot and slammed into the back of ambulance on his way in, left the scene of the accident staggering drunk, had to be helped into his smock by  a nurse or orderly and had to be held up so he wouldn't fall in the operating room, would you feel comfortable? Then, what if one look at his eyes told you he might be under the influence of alcohol or perhaps worse substances?

Or would you feel a little better if the new doctor – versed in all the most modern surgical techniques – and prepared with years of residency and internship, showed up sober as a preacher and took command of the situation involving your loved one?

Who do you think Rene would choose for one of his family members?

The second  runoff candidate forum for the District 37 race between  Oliveira and Dominguez will happen tomorrow before Valley Interfaith at an Accountability Session.

Officials say they will hold the so-called "accountability" session from 11 a.m. to noon at St. Eugene de Mazenod Catholic Church, 5409 Austin Road in Brownsville.

The gall of an acknowledged alcoholic, who fled the scene of an accident, to compare his questionable candidacy in jeopardy, to that of "a brain surgeon for your child'" and who would we choose!absolutely not a drunk doctor no matter his experience. Oliveira, is a disgrace to the communities he fell short of representing, subjecting our impoverished region to being 20 years behind from the rest of the state, when there has been no representation, but a drunk who fell short of his job description.

I am a better Muff diver when I am drunk than sober. As the biggest count around I should know as I have years of experience of being a cunt drunk, and a drunken cunt to know the difference.

Gee Rene, I don't know. If you were drunk looking at my child's opened brain with a surgical knife in your hand slurring to your nurses what to do next and Alex right next to you as a newly minted doctor, I think I would take my chances with Alex. At least he wouldn't leave the room and would hold himself accountable if something went wrong. This is about Rene's speed. He keeps on referencing his delusional and less than stellar record of being in office. To all voters in his district and to those stalwart supporters of his, please wake up, for all our sakes. I applaud Alex for taking the high road at that debate. I would have taken him to task right there in public and said, "depends if the surgeon is drunk or not" and bullied him right back.

Other than that, I'm really tired of looking at that ugly face on billboards along 77.

I am goingg to write another letter to the Editor about this corruption and leavingg the scene of a DWI wreck as his girlfriend lies and leaves the scene too. This is very wrong. Sincerely. Marco Henry

Cameron County, deserves better state representation than a drunk who aside from being highly irresponsible getting behind the wheel drunk, and putting society at risk, Mr. Oliveira, seems to have lost respect feeding his liquor habit in public in total disregard to the safety of others raising the concern that a vote for Oliveira is the wrong choice. Come on Cameron County, we can do better than a drunk and alcoholic for a state rep.
