BUSINESS WOMAN ANNA OQUIN APPOINTED TO B.P.U.B.

Special to El Rrun-Rrun

Anna Oquin, a local business woman who runs a number of successful McDonald's franchises in the city, has been appointed as a member of the Brownsville Public Utility Board.

Oquin, who ran for the board of the Brownsville Independent School District before, will replace Rafael Vela whose four-year term expires June 30. The item to replace Vela was placed on the agenda for Tuesday's City of Brownsville Commission meeting by commissioners Jessica Tetreau and Cesar de Leon.

There were no other nominations made by other commissioners at the meeting.

Oquin, a frequent speaker at BISD during the public comment public period, often criticizes the district board and administration for lack of oversight on fiscal matters and for lack of accountability. Her nomination is seen as further evidence that Mayor Tony Martinez is losing his grip on the BPUB. Martinez, as mayor, is an ex-oficio member of the board.

According to past news stories, Anna and her husband Lonnie moved to Brownsville in 2002 to purchase three McDonalds restaurants and now own five. They both started working at a McDonalds in Houston after high school and  married in 1996.

They started with three restaurants: one on Southmost Boulevard, one at the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College and the one on South Frontage near the zoo.

Oquin joins current members Martin Arambula (term expires 06/30/2019), Nurith Galonsky (08/15/2021), Rafael Chacon (06/30/2019), Armando Magallanes (06/30/2020), and Tino Villarreal (08/15/2021).

Great for Brownsville. We need more fiscally conservative, financially independent minded people on city boards.

Tony Martinez "lost a grip" years ago. He is not leader and, like BISD, the city has no oversight and financial accountability for anything. The city flounders while other cities in the Valley move progressively forward. Tony Martinez wants Brownsville to "be the way it was" and fails to see anything other than "downtown".

Ms. Oquin, maybe the good folks of PUB-aka customers can now get a refund on those high electrical rates that they have been paying for the last 5 years and were increased to pay for the Tankaska-canasta new power plant? The one that PUB/tanaska venture never built? how about that one for starters? check it out.

Good For Brownsville....time to include more of Brownsville residents in the process. Previous boards and leaders use the "same" people for everything.
There are more good people in our community who can be the voice for the majority...instead of the few.

Time for more representation on the boards. Time to include more diverse residents on the boards. Time to stop appointment the same 3 families for EVERYTHING!

Anna Oquin, Please look into and make public the property transaction that happened on the right of way at Central blvd and Wild Rose lane. Please make the votes and property transactions PUBLIC. Don't be afraid to ask for information that you are entitled to!!!!! Please look into ALL right of way transactions and don't be afraid of asking the former attorney Eddie Trevino for information!!! PUB is owned by the city of Brownsville and that means corruption at PUB is PUBLIC CORRUPTION.

Whoever doubts the fiscal handling at BISD obviously does not keep up with the activities. When a district as big as BISD comes out with A+++ reports from the agency that evaluates that, how can someone say the district does not have any fiscal know how. Lorenzo Sanchez is the best financial officer that has been at BISD since Homer Hanna. Those in-between were lining their pockets or didn't know what they were doing costing many superintendent their jobs. Lorenzo is known as the person who squeezes the buffalo on the nickle before he spends a cent. Why is Martin Arambula on two boards?

Maybe she can start by trimming all the top fat managers and vps upstairs . Most do very little except attend one lunch meeting after the other. They think they are some kind of privileged upper class. Get rid of them and pay the real workers out in the field.
