After parting ways with Rio Hondo and flirting with joining San Bene ISD, Dr. Sylvia Atkinson, also a Brownsville Independent School District board member, has joined Texas Southmost College.
Atkinson began work Wednesday and has been chosen to address student outreach and community enrichment in the far-flung rural school populations in places like Santa Rosa, Rio Hondo, Port Isabel, and the like.
Since the disastrous "UTB-TSC "partnership" gave short shrift to the technical and vocational mission of the community college, there has been a steady flight of students from TSC to other workforce training and vocational institutions like TSTC in Harlingen and others up the valley.
TSC and its new administration is now focusing on making the college attractive to these students so they can attend here.
For that reason, said a TSC administrator, Atkinson, already a board member of the BISD, TSC largest feeder district, was seen as a good fit for the college.
"She has the energy of four normal human beings," he quipped. "We're hoping she brings that energy to her position and help us build up our enrollment of these students. She's going to need it."
(Incidentally, Atkinson was one of the few community members who stepped forward publicly and supported the board majority to expedite TSC independence from the UT System. Judging by her post on social media, she is hitting the ground running.)
TSC has seen a steady increase of its students since the separation from UTB. This past year (2017), it set a new record since it began operational independence in 2013.
"With a 6,739 student head count for the spring 2018 semester that began on Jan. 16, TSC shattered all previous enrollment records set since the college re-opened in fall 2013 to establish a new all-time record" the college website states.
"TSC’s record-breaking enrollment in spring 2018 was a 25 percent overall increase from the spring 2017 semester.
"At a time when enrollment at other colleges has tapered off or fallen flat, Texas Southmost College continues to demonstrate sustainable growth thanks to a supportive board of trustees, dedicated students, and the hard work of faculty and staff,” Dr. Jesus Roberto Rodriguez, TSC President said.
“TSC is providing our community with a high-quality education that is close to home, and that leads to rewarding careers. In the Lower Rio Grande Valley, the community is responding by making TSC their destination of choice to pursue a higher education."
Atkinson will work coordinate her efforts with other administrators, a staffer said. The effectiveness of TSC efforts to funnel these students here will be monitored constantly to achieve maximum effectiveness, she said.
Atkinson will be under the supervision of Dr. Joanna Kile, Vice-President of Instruction.

What about the ADN nursing program? Will it be reinstated?
When? Can Sylvia answer that burning question?
Gotta stop the musical chairs bit with our Mexicans. Same faces doing the macarena, Montoya. Need new and different blood.
Too many Atkinsons, too many Zavaletas, too many Rodriguez, too much cronyism.
This is the good old buddy system or pork, from Adela Garza to Sylvia Atkinson. Adela has been a huge dissappointment and has proven to be just like the rest of the corrupt politicians looking out for their self serving intetests.
Shame on you Adela

Dr.Garcias, get over it, take it like a man.
Juan, you haven't updated latest comments in two days!
Don't pick and choose to protect your favorite corrupt ones.
This was a politically motivated appointment by the board of trustees. The position did not even exist and had to be manufactured in order to accommodate. Disturbing along so many dimensions! Shame... Shame... Shame...
I would be ashamed to say I work at BISD...
It seems that the more education and degrees you get the more stupid you become.
I would have NEVER known of all the corruption and malfeasance in most tax subsidized agencies if it were not for the local blogs. Most corrupt cities alleged bribery of leading politicians by businessmen seeking construction contracts and bypassing rules and regulations. Another form of corruption is the in-house type. Nepotism, favoritism and failure to correct incompetence and failure to address and correct internal security to protect. 95% of citizens believe that corruption is institutionalized. Prevalence of dishonest practices – corruption of local politics, "RESOURCE ALLOCATION", and failure of delivery of services to citizens.
In many cities, concerted fight backs against corruption have met with some success. Innovative forms of urban planning and design which aim to ensure cities are more responsive to the needs of citizens and make corrupt practices much harder are becoming more prominent.
Who are the gatekeepers of these resources? The voter, the concern citizen, blogs that report on the operations of tax supported agencies and other news media casting.
Sure it was political; to run side by side with the JJ's election to the board. But what is so funny is that if Dr. A had not taken off to take somebody's job in Rio Hondo as she did, she would have been available for the position of President, instead of Dr. Rodriguez. Adela had wanted to take her with her but Dr. A made a foolish move and she lost out. She could have been the TSC President and now that she has her foot in the door, Dr. Rodriguez better watch it cause guess who is now in town? I give them at least a year for her to take the reigns. Mark my words! Right, Mary Frances?
Juan, you are still withholding comments that are being posted. What gives? You are loosing credibility, guy!
Juan, you do a lot of damage and disservice to your community by defending and promoting corruption. You gravitate to the corrupt world that you associate with. Brownsville will continue to be a third world community with "American"citizens(?)like you.
Juan is probably locked up and can't keep up with the comments from the metiches in Brownsville. What the hell has happened and where the hell is he? Swimming with the whales in Alaska, o no lo dejo Trump to come back into the country?
There are a limited (entertainment) joints here in B-town that attract Don Juan's attention. Of course one of them is Carrizales...lol
