MIGDALIA LOPEZ: MIGRANT, CAB DIVER, DISTRICT JUDGE

By Juan Montoya

We were reminded that longtime 197th District Court Judge Migdalia Lopez will retire this coming January after deciding she would not seek reelection.

We had mentioned in a previous post that the judge had attended Central Michigan University and received her degree in Social Work there before getting her law degree in Houston.

That led us to the graphic above of a CMU Alumnus magazine where her profile revealed – unbeknownst to us – that she was the daughter of a Puerto Rican maid who migrated to Michigan. Migdalia, encouraged by her mother, by the dint of hard work and struggle climbed to the top of her profession. (Click on graphic to enlarge.)

Come January, the 197th District Court will be presided over by former magistrate Adolfo Cordova who beat attorney Carlos Masso in a runoff in this year's Democratic Party primary.

Migdalia –  or "Micky" to her friends – will long be remembered by the local bar and the judiciary. And there will always be a soft spot in our hearts for her.

And all because of her Mom who taught her how to be her own person and seek for a better life for her and her family. She did this by being true to herself and to those whom she represented and she did it with pride and commitment to the rule of law. But then, shouldn't all judges do the same? Judge Migdalia is the epitome of what a judge should be and Brownsville should be very proud of her. I know I am and oh, how I wish all judges were like her.

While you're at it do one on Blake Farenthold. Farenthold served as the Republican U.S. Representative for Texas's 27th congressional district from 2011 until his resignation in April 2018 in the wake of reports he used public funds to settle a sexual harassment lawsuit. Farenthold comes from Belgian immigrants.

All families have skeletons in their closet, but it is up to the individual person to rise above any negative actions for which he/she is not responsible. And when you study your ancestors, you will find that most of them were good people who were just searching for a better life and did contribute to the formation of this great country. All it took was pride and integrity. We are all from other places, even the Native Americans who came through the Bering Strait. Think about it before you offend people who have worked hard to get to where they are!!!!
