Monday is the last day to file for a position on the ballot for the November Brownsville Independent School District elections.

As a member of the board, the office holders hold a huge sway on the education of some 43,000 students, and 7,500 employees. The BISD is the city's largest employer and operates budgets approximating $500 million annually. The economic spin off from spending those funds will reverberate across the city and region's economy.
The BISD – through a Tax Restructuring Election and a 11.5 percent increase in property taxes – is now in the midst of a construction binge that could top $100 million in the next five years. It's enough to make any contractor's mouth water. Who will get the contracts, get a job with the district, or be promoted to a higher - and better paying - position, is influenced by who sits on the board, although many will try to deny it.

It is, in a sense, the most important election in the city and affects thousands of families and their livelihoods, and, oh yeah, their children's education.

By the way, although the candidates above have stated that they are running for those positions, expect some last-minute jockeying at the very end of the 5:30 p.m. Monday deadline that might see candidates jumping from one to the other as they see the field change. Throw in a few candidates who have not yet announced, and it will be a free for all at the main office.

The position should not matter unless it is being done to unbalance the equation and take votes from a potential winner. Some are pulled in to run in order to sway the vote now and later. Each one should run for any position and is only there to help approve administrative innovations that will help our children and teachers. Who cares what position you run for. We want you to run with honesty and integrity and not compadrismo because someone asked you to run on their side. The community has a very important decision to make in the election but most important to make sure to even show up to vote. 5000 votes is not even one vote per student at BISD and so that shows that some parents do not give a hoot. I can almost bet that half of those votes may be teachers, but yet the are there to file grievance for a stare that the principal gave her for coming in late.

Isn’t Powers the one who had his wife and family promoted to higher positions during his last term in the BISD board?

No Mexicans? That is why BISD is so fucked up now. Anyone but Coach Joe, just say no to Erasmo and Elizondo and Drue Brown is smart and will focus on what is best for students. Now if we could only vote Zendejas out...who is starting to look a lot like Queen Julieta.

Well we know who pushing for Brown, Powers, Tipton. That's Sylvias dream team

I have been voting for school board members since the 60's and I have noticed that incumbents generally lose when teachers are not satisfied with their conduct or performance of duties. Teachers will rally to the polls and vote them out. They become a powerful force when they unite and I feel this is going to happen again and Rodgriguez, Lopez, and Escobedo will lose.
