Special to El Rrun-Rrun
Well, the Eighth Annual Freddie Gomez Memorial Conjunto Festival has come and gone.
We will not be remiss and thank the City of Brownsville, the Brownsville Society for the Performing Arts, the South Texas Conjunto Association and all the individuals and groups who worked together to bring the open-street (and free) concert to downtown Brownsville. Lupe Saenz, of the STCA, intimated that this might be the last time he will serve as the organizer of the event after hosting it as MC for the last eight years. Lupe was the founder of the STCA since its start in Mercedes oh so long ago.
In fact, the writer of this blog participated in the first awards concert at the time. Saenz, literally, has been the force behind the passing forth of the conjunto tradition as has Timo Ruedas, a retired U.S. Customs agent from Brownsville with a predilection for native conjunto music.

Throughout the evening, throngs moved through Levee Street as various conjunto bands sang traditional music from the city-provided band stand. We were sent the camera video taken by a conjunto fan. It features local conjunto Juan Tovar y Los Pobres singing Gomez's trademark song, El Soldado Razo.
We apologize in advance for the quality of the video, but ask that you please overlook that and listen to the music and the words of the song that describes a Mexican-American veteran as he is leaving his home and loved ones (especially his mom) and headed for war.
In case you've forgotten the lyrics, here they are:
Me voy de soldado razo
Voy a empesar a la fila
Con los valientes muchachos
Que dejan madres queridas
Que dejan novias llorando
llorando su despedida
Voy contento a la guerra
Ya tengo rifle y pistola
Ya volvere de sargento
Cuando se he acabe la bola
Nomas una cosa siento
Dejar a mi madre sola
Virgen morena
Mi madre te encomiendo
Cuidala que es muy buena
Cuidala mientras vuelvo
Mi virgen guadalupana
Protejare mi bandera
Ay cuando me halle en compana
Cuando estoy lejos de mi tierra
Les probare que mi raza
Sabe morir donde quiera
Manana salgo temprano
Al despuntar nuevo dia
Aqui va otro mexicano
Que va jugar se la vida
Que se despide cantando
Que viva la patria mia
Virgen morena
Mandales un consuelo
Nunca jamas permitas

The scumbag Rene Oliveria didn't turn up after all, he sat at home with roasted balls, waiting for his court date.
Shitty clothing worn by these people hurts my eyes. smh
Sad, those dancers are all out of step. Or it like everything else Mexican - freeflow?
Mexi-Conjunto "Lo Mejor" not hillybillies that don't wear shoes have toe nail fungus and stink like mierda... lowlifers skunks
No one invited Eduardo Paz Martinez to the party? Ooohhhh he didn’t buy a ticket, probe viejito. Maybe Eddie TreviƱo can get him a gift card to Sally’s ....for his midnight orangutan tint. Quien sobby .
Jerry McHale has toenail fungus, no? Didn't he write about that from Mexico? smh
It would be a great surprise to us all if that was all MCHALE got, the time he spent with the scumbag Oliveria, if I was him I would get a shot ASAP.
What a shot of tequila?
