BISD BOARD ELECTION WINNERS TO BE SWORN IN TODAY

Special to El Rrun-Rrun

Three new members will replace three incumbents on the board of the Brownsville Independent School District today.

The swearing-in ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. at the BISD Main Office at 1900 Price Road after the votes are canvassed by the existing board and certificates of election are given to the new members.

After they make their statement of officer "not directly or indirectly paid, offered, promised to pay, contributed, or promised to contribute any money or thing of value, or promised any public office or employment for the giving or withholding of a vote at the election at which I was elected or as a reward to secure my appointment or confirmation," they will take their oath.

Replacing Cesar Lopez at Position 1 will be Drue Brown, a longtime Public Information Officer with the district. Lopez had initially filed for reelection, but withdrew.

Brown retired from the BISD after 25 years with the district. Former District Judge Robert Garza will swear her in.

Replacing Carlos Elizondo at Position 2 will be Erasmo Castro. Elizondo, a former Brownsville Fire Department Fire Chief, has been under indictment on 11 felony charges. Castro has previously run for the school board and for various other positions, including mayor for the City of Brownsville.

His father, the Rev. Erasmo Castro, is a minister at Iglesia de Cristo and will administer the oath of office him in. Castro was the top vote getter in this election with 10,681 votes.

Replacing Position 4 incumbent Joe Rodriguez will be Dr. Prisci Roca-Tipton. Rodriguez, with nearly 3 decades in the BISD staff as athletic coach and director, also served 17 years as trustee. This is Dr. Roca-Tipton's first elective office.

At 18, she ran her family's shrimp boat business at the Port of Brownsville and since 2015 has been the Texas Southmost College Coordinator of Sponsored Programs, Grants, and Contracts. She will be sworn in by Justice of the Peace 2-3 Maria Ester Sorola.

With the board president gone will they automatically reorganize tonight or will it default to the remain officer

There is nothing on the agenda for this afternoon about reorganization, but it will surely be on the next election, or unless they call a special called board meeting for just that. If that is the case, the public will not be heard since public speaking is not included in called-meeting.

So, may I say, to the 3 new members, please take this seriously and focus on what is good for the children and teachers. Keep personal agendas away and do not "look a certain way on the board table to get an OK to speak, or express your conscious." Do not let "anyone" tell you how to vote. Study the issue on the agenda before you go to the meeting and have your questions answered before-hand instead of waiting to speak up at the board meeting. If you get your answer, don't circle every item that you want to discuss. Keep up to the promises that you made while campaigning and maybe, just maybe, we can believe in you. Work together and agree to disagree if it is for the good of the children and teachers. Continue to add on to the greatness BISD has already achieved.

12:59 spot on. As the only surviving officer the Board President temporarily may go to Laura Perez-Reyes until they can have a vote. Do you not have to have a Board president to call a special meeting?

I'm just asking - I'm not sure.

Bobby, you actually are admitting that you do not know everything? Laura is the only officer left, so she will be at the President's chair at the next meeting. I am certain the reorganization will be on the agenda and it really does stand to reason. As I have witnessed for many years, the presidency always seems to be selected according to years of service and terms. As I see it, it seems it should go to Sylvia or Laura. Sylvia would make sure to keep order, especially if it does not go against her vindictive agenda. Laura is new but in the little time she has served, I have noticed that she is on top of things as an objective participant. If Sylvia would pay the game by the rules and for the good of all, she would make a good president but I seriously doubt that

Say, last night at a gathering of BISD stakeholders, I was told that the current board members are promising things to each other, such as positions on the board, if they promise to vote a certain way. I hear that the one who blesses everyone is being herself, which I call sacraligious, and bad-mouthing people - golpes de pecho. As a recent born-again Christian, I am most certainly disappointed on any person who uses religion to pull the wool over people's eye. Well, at least not mine! Another one believes she is God gift to BISD and dictates her commands or else. Maybe I should return again to my old religion - none!

A picture replaces a lot of words! Pricsi's picture must be from when she was in high school. Why hide behind a picture?? Will you hide like that on your actions or votes?

Maybe she won't attend board meetings or maybe she will wearing a costume

Ha! A joke around town is that Sylvia has gone to Tony's Party Mart in McAllen to have 5 identical masks that look like her, to give to "her slate" to wear to every meeting. That would be something to see! One of them is more than enough!
