DID BISD POLITICS RUN OUT PATTERSON TO HIDALGO, U OF M?

By Juan Montoya
Shea Patterson, a former five-star and top pro-style quarterback in the country who is leading the University of Michigan toward a national title, once lived in Brownsville and attended local schools before his family packed up and left to Hidalgo.

Patterson, who then went on to play with the Hidalgo Pirates, was named the 2012 RGVSorts.com All-Valley Newcomer of the Year and would have stayed in the valley except for troubles in that city's school board. Local sources say that the family also had a discouraging experience with the Brownsville Independent School District.

The Pattersons spent five years in the Valley, two in Brownsville and three in Hidalgo. During that time, Shea rose to prominence, making his name as one of the top prospects for the class of 2016.

During their stay in Brownsville, She's father Sean, a vendor for Vector Concepts, that sold sports flooring to local school districts, encountered alleged bias in obtaining contacts with the BISD., former board members said.

In at least one occasion, Vector Concepts thought they had won an award for building additions to the Porter Early College High School only to have it awarded to a company with close political ties to a former board trustee. Discouraged, and with BISD coaches eyeing his son's obvious talents, Sean Patterson decided to move his family to Hidalgo.

There, apparently, things didn't fare any better and the Pattersons left the valley for Louisiana citing business considerations.

The McAllen Monitor reported that after Vector Concepts took away the company’s territory in San Antonio, where most of the business came from, Sean was forced to look elsewhere to broaden his sales, something Shea understood.

“The first thing you think of is all your friends and all the things you’ve done for football and all the great relationships I’ve built with everyone here,” Shea said. “But you have to do what’s best for your family. It’s a great opportunity for us and it’s really hard to pass up.”

Sean’s brother, Christopher, was the director of the Brownsville Parks and Recreation Department and resigned in 2015 saying he wanted to pursue career opportunities closer to his family.
While at Hidalgo, The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Patterson threw for 1,386 yards and 18 touchdowns and rushed for 414 yards and four scores in leading the Pirates to a 7-4 overall record and a district championship this season.

But as is usually the case, political discord in Hidalgo that prevented the board from appointing a football coach likely played a part in the Pattersons' departure from the valley.

“Those types of things are just on the side,” Sean told The Monitor. “Whenever things negative are going on, it makes it a bit easier to make that move. Whatever happens with the (school) board, those are their issues. Right now, there’s no football coach in place, so stuff like that makes it easier (to leave).

Now,  Bleacher Report's Matt Miller reported on Friday that Patterson – along with Ohio State's Dwayne Haskins – are two of several juniors expected to declare after the season. The Wolverines' quarterback told The Monitor several years back that a strong work ethic and perseverance will inevitably show. The whole thing boils down to hard work.

“It doesn’t matter where you go to school,” Shea said. “If you work hard, every single day, and take care of academics, it will show. People will notice you.
“There’s so much talent in the Valley that hasn’t been seen yet.”

"What a shame that quality players like Patterson had to leave because of the political climate in Brownsville and in Hidalgo," said a former BISD trustee. "People from other parts of the country look at us and laugh at some of the things that happen here. They say, oh, well, Brownsville is Brownsville."

My sister was turned down as an Eaglettes at BHS and I don't remember my mother moving us anywhere because they didn't select Linda. Instead, Mother taught us that there are times when things don't go your way and you must learn to accept it and not make excuses for messing up the opportunity. I guess Trump wasn't the first one who threw a tantrum when things don't go his way. Besides, schools major focus should revolve around academics, or so my nother taught us all.

A little of the topic but just wanted to insert a thought that several of us were discussing this morning. We concluded that all the problems and fights and concerns and arguments and innuendos, rumors, and gossip in Brownsville is the fault of blogs like this one. That is extremely not true. It is us, the idiots who play along with the method of "social media" that are the major problem-makers. I too shall move to a city that has no blogs that tempt us and provide an avenue for rumors and gossip.

"I guess Trump wasn't the first one who threw a tantrum when things don't go his way."
So does that mean that Democrats accepted the election results and they didn't throw a temper tantrum?
So when the Democrats resist, obstruct, complain and whine about anything Trump does it's not considered a temper tantrum?
You're so blinded by so much hate that Trump won that you don't realize how many temper tantrums the Democrats throw everyday. This has been going on for two years and you have to live with it at least another two years.
It's so bad that after two years you still can't accept the fact that Trump won.

Problem makers? At times maybe but some of these blog sights is where the truth comes out these politicians are full of crap down here and its good for the taxpayer to read about there bullshit and greed. The Herald newspaper nor the local news channels 4 and 5 have the balls to cover some of these stories. So if you want to walk around with your head in the sand then you should move to another city.

Like possums, blogs can be annoying and sometimes darn right ugly but occasionally they attach and eat baby rats and in the process also attach and kill beautiful little birds and the bird nest eggs. They also like to eat dog and cat food. They even eat citrus fruit off the trees like tangerines etc. Not all blog entries are good but occasionally they smell out a rat and they"re work is done in the dark of night to catch their sleeping prey.

Sea Patterson was groomed in Ohio football culture since birth to become a Quarterback Prodigy!
But like many superstars that have played in the RGV and moved on to college sports, most of them are not from the RGV. They came here for one reason: to rack up football stats against poorly trained football teams. Sea would of never made it if he stayed In Ohio -NEVER!!!
He played for BYFL and his dad pulled him out because he wanted every single play to be about Sea and wanted to make sure Sea did not have a backup quarterback so Sea would always rack up the non stop stats as a QB. Same thing happened when Sea went to Vela Middle School in Brownsville. His dad wanted Sea to be the only QB racking stats and was pissed that another Brownsville QB was stepping on his toes. SO they left to Hidalgo. Guess what? Same thing happened over there! Racked up the stats and became a superstar at our native football players expense! Who has Hidalgo ever beat? Who? SO they move to a small meaningless private school in Louisiana and win the state championship. Way to go! Why didn't Sea Patterson stick around and play In TEXAS 6A FOOTBALL??? Because his stats would have gone down the drain as well as his recruiting prospects! He finally begs IMG to take him in after cheating his way up as well as being academically retained 2 or 3 times before he graduated. Yes, he was a grown ass man when he graduated high school and takes that extra and final year at IMG to get the national attention and the much needed training and the prestigious pull that IMG offers with college recruiters.
If you remember, Sea got injured at Ole Miss, and then ditched that university as well. Sea has not honor or loyalty to any friend, team or coach. This happy football parent is happy he is not representing Texas.
His games at Michigan are exciting to watch, no doubt! He is now and always been a natural. He will make it to the BCS Playoffs and soon drafted into the NFL. That is quite a story to tell for generations. Too bad he took the easy way out time and time again.

We are all proud of Sea Patterson, but not in the way

If you read all the comments up to now, I will agree with all that is said because it seems like there is more to the story then what was printed. That is the major problem, cause we listen to rumors and individual insights and make up our minds to be sucked in that hole. That is why competition is good but corrupt in some instances, so many shy away. That is why some good strong sensible individuals do not get involved in politics or anything for that matter. What does being a Democrat or Republican have to do with ideals? We were sucked into 4 years for our current president because the electoral college did not vote to please the popular vote and that is what is wrong with having Trump as our President. I respect the position but I do not respect a so-called man that is so crude and a HUGE LIAR. We don't know what to believe from him now, so he has lost all respect from me and many others, including some ouf your Republicans.

Who gives a damn, just looks at the people in the COB commissioners, they don't give a damn either.

Anonymous talking smack his name is Shea not Sea you fucken moron. Since he was here his dad had bigger plans, Brownsville does have a lot of bull shit, we can all agree on that. FYI don’t be a douche because your kid couldn’t hack it, if it were easy everyone would do it. You seem to know a lot about family, your either a crab or a grasshopper.

Anonymous said...

Seems the only one who could not "hack it" in the RGV was Patterson's father.

Any good football player will leave Brownsville...terrible football, terrible coaches and a losing culture.

Anonymous said...

It happened with Patterson, with Powers and now Tolman. I suspect it is all connected to the dictators of the Atkinson family, right? If the parents would learn to leave the kids alone, they would function so much better and that also includes Cornejo-Lopez.

Life should not dwell around football. Work hard as you play but concentrate on getting an education that will support you and your future family. After all, when we do have a student who gets the opportunity to play college or professional football, they mess up in college because of their lack of study habits. I have always wondered why and how the are able to learn so many football plays but can not give you change for a dollar. Concentrate on an education and good study skills.
