(Ed.'s Note: Depending on the condition of your car, the first thing that will go will be either the suspension, the tires, the shocks, your tailpipe, or your windshield will crack. That is if you don't hit one of these craters on the road and lose control of the car and veer off the roadway or into an oncoming car. Is this the reason used tire shop and muffler shops proliferate in this town?
(In case you are stumped, this is the Roosevelt Street section between 13th Street and McDavitt adjacent to Victoria Elementary.)
We have grown weary of writing (and we're sure you have grown weary of reading) that Brownsville lacks a credible drainage system to prevent the breakup of the roadways every time it rains. These past few days we never really got a downpour in town, but the chipi-chipi over a few days has resulted in the usual pothole appearing on the streets.
If these seem familiar, they should. They are the same ones that City of Brownsville Public Works crews patched up last time it rained. And they will be the same ones they will patch when it rains a few weeks from now. We are literally providing job security for these guys and throwing money down the drain.
The city fathers (and one particular mother or nannie) have seen fit to spend millions on deluxe bike and hike trails that don't flood to attract the millions of tourists that will come to ride them, they tell us. So far the millions of "active" tourists have not appeared, but we're sure seeing a lot of our fellow city residents actively dodging the holes and oncoming traffic. Incidentally, after this post appeared, one of our bike-riding friends says he thought a small puddle on one of our streets was nothing and he rode over it only to end up on the pavement when he found out it was a deep water-filled pothole.
Hopefully the elections next May will see candidates who are conscientious men and women who will run to address the most basic of all city services, drainage.)

Pragmatism is the key word here. Our elected city government officials should prioritize spending money on projects that provide safety, security, and essential benefits first.
Driving safely is a legitimate concern for everyone. Riding a bike is basically a recreational activity in climates with higher temperatures such as Brownsville or even Texas in general. How can even one dime spent for bicyclists be justified if it means taking that same money away from road safety for automobile drivers as well as providing services for people who ride the bus (like shaded bus shelters with seats)???
Government in general and city government in particular are supposed to serve the needs of the people. How can money be spent on non-essentials like bike paths be justified when safety issues like road maintenance, bus shelters, etc. are recurring issues which present safety hazards to the people of Brownsville? Surely our elected representatives can do better than this. Vote them in or out based on their record of putting the people of Brownsville's safety and well-being first!
The pictures posted on EL RRUN RRUN of roads that have huge potholes in them are shameful and a reflection of our elected officials' lack of priorities and worse, problem solving skills. These potholes represent the space in between their ears where their brains should be!
Coincidently, I just drove by there this afternoon and plan to call the HELP line on Monday to give them hell. From McDavitt to International Blvd, the road needs to be resurfaced and repaved immediately. Those tenants pay taxes just like everyone else and the city is not addressing their needs. Roosevelt Street from International to Gonzalas Park was redone recently, but some one decided to build new apartments right pass Faulk Middle School and tore up the brand new street. What commissioner is in charge of Roosevelt Street. Gowen and Longoria, right? Get your head out of your personal projects and work for the people. Park your bicycles and use the paving material for bike trails for the citizens that have to develop obstacle driving skills when we drive through there. Oh, but since it is not Ebony Ave or Jacaranda street, it is not necessary, right?
Not important on the other side of the tracks. The bike and hike trails are of utmost important.
If you can get this street added to the hike and bike trails, then it will be repaired within the week or less.

I busted my rear wheel on my bike yesterday, who do I have to claim from for a new wheel.
Don't need to waste your time in calling these bozos. We just need to vote them out of office its just around the corner just the state rep and the bisd board. Can't wait to vote ALL of them OUT...

It's all over Brownsville Juan! Belvedere Dr and Avalon both meet in front of the mayors 1848 BBQ, and they are horrible! No one seems to care.
