EXCEPT FOR TITO, THE TREVIS, NO JOY OVER MR. AMIGO 2018

(Ed.'s Note: No sooner had the Mr. Amigo Association headed by Arturo Treviño (owner of Los Trevi's convenience stores in Matamoros and Brownsville) announced that Mexican billionaire's Carlos Slim's son-in-law Arturo Elias Ayub was their Mr. Amigo 2018 that the polemica began.

Who is this guy?, residents asked. What has he done? The answer is that he works for his father-in-law in Grupo Carso and as such is the director of Strategic Alliances and Content of America Movil, director of Telmex and also of Uno TV, all subsidiaries of Slim's group.

He is also a member of the Shark Tank Mexico.

But as Brownsville Independent School District board president asks: "Ok, so because he has money he was chosen?"

Matas reply was a lame "Hopefully, to bring business to Brownsville."

If Ayub bring anything to the border, it will probably be to Matamoros, not to Brownsville, as Treviño, a savvy businessman from northern Tamaulipas well knows. Hw many opportunities do mover and shakers there get to rub elbows with the likes of Slim's in-laws?

It doesn't appear that many Brownsville residents ares buying the snake oil. A commenter to this blog stated: "Only a handful of people will monetary benefit from him and it is not you or me much less Brownsville. Maybe Matamoros but not us."

On every social media outlet, whether it be The Brownsville Herald, KVEO, Mr Amigo Facebook page or anyone posting who the selection of Mr Amigo is has had a bad review.

No one believes that this man will one bring jobs, put Brownsville on the map or bring in crowds to pay to see him.

But what is more interesting in the exchange to the choice from BISD President Minerva Peña with active board member of Mr Amigo Tito Mata who also worked for BISD.

BISD is the biggest employer of the city and let’s be honest: the parents go to the parade to see their children and grand children and a celebrity. Now that the president of BISD is not happy with the selection will they lay out the red carpet or pull the rug from under their feet?

Another said: "It’s not cheap to stop everything to go see to Mr Amigo when you think no one will attend. If the so called billionaire doesn’t come to Brownsville giving thousands of dollars in scholarships to Brownsville students or promises to build a manufacturing company that will employ people at high paying jobs, then why pay to go see him?"

A legitimate question..

We will eagerly await for our kids to reap the fruits of this year's Mr. Amigo Association's selection. But we wouldn't hold our breath.)

Trevino took the opportunity to capitalize on selecting this guy for self gain. When will Brownsville's elected officials stop thinking of themselves and start thinking of the city...shame on these guys..Mr. Amigo? Nobody knows who this guy is except for Trevino and company who will try to profit from it. People like to see celebrities, singers not rich people from Mexico. For all those that chimed in on selecting this guy for Mr. Amigo, eat crap.

The Slims know very well where Matamoros is -They happen to own the national restaurants known as Sanborns.... which just happened to close its doors permanently in Matamoros.

- He is a wasted opportunity. He should have been brought in to UTRGV as a speaker.

MAA can choose ... Alex Fernandez (Vicente Fernandez grandson), Jaime Camil, some solo artist, some novela guy...

wasted opportunity..

Mr. Amigo has always been a "clickish" organization. Spending lavishly on themselves with trips to D.F. to wine and dine with "O P Money". It is apparent they have run out of viable candidates. It is high time for Mr. Amigo to "fold up shop" and say "Adios Amigo". It is beginning to stink as we can see. Nothing lasts forever.

Why bother with his son-in-law? Mr. Amigo should have chosen Mr. Carlos Slim himself. Mr.Slim does not have time for this petty stuff. He has bigger fish to fry. What happened to the Presidents of Mexico and the Cantiflas of the past? Famous people not the obscure ones of today that no body cares for. The well has run dry.

Why is Minerva complaining? She milks it every year and takes advantage of all the freebies that are afforded to her during the festivities. Arturo, not Carlos Treviño makes the decision as President and will suffer the consequences with the Raza going down Elizabeth Street. Other than the parades the Mr. Amigo events are private and are usually 90% sponsored; so I don't really think that Treviño will be bothered. As in years past when the honoree does not meet the expectations of the people; let's at least be courteous and not embarras our city.

And this is exactly why people need an education in local history. This Mr. Amigo selection is a poor choice, but not for the reasons some people are complaining about. First, it is not the responsibility of Mr. Amigo to bring business to Brownsville. If you want to hold an entity accountable for bringing more business, industry and commerce to Brownsville, look to the city officials and the Chamber of Commerce. That has NEVER been the responsibility of the Mr. Amigo association.

In the mid-1960's, the Chamber of Commerce was the entity that selected the first Mr. Amigo, former Mexican president Miguel Alemán. The chamber wanted to honor a Mexican citizen who had “significantly contributed to U.S. – Mexico friendship.” Nothing was ever said about using Mr. Amigo to bring business to Brownsville.

The Mr. Amigo Association is going about this whole thing all wrong. That's the problem when money starts controlling everything and every single entity in town tries to get money out of every event. Mr. Amigo should be an entertainer, or someone who actually has contributed to the unique partnership between Brownsville/Texas/The United States and Matamoros/Tamaulipas/Mexico. At a time when relations between our two countries aren't the best they've been, this would have been a perfect opportunity to remind everybody of the symbiotic relationship between the two cities.

We don't need a wall, we need unity, but the Mr. Amigo Association thought it would be better to choose a relatively unknown rich person rather than someone who could bring the community together.

Mr. Slim buys property in NY, Miami, LA... what does Brownsville have to offer compared to those cities?

Vicente Fox would be a great Mr. Amigo. He has been in the valley before as a youth and would bring a resume along with being a former Mexican president. Not only that he brings a chi**@ a tu m*d*e attitude tiwards Trump and his wall. Great public speaker. Vicente Fox should be Mr. Amigo.

Brownsville has been taken over by the Matamoros rich kids: Danaches, Trevinos, Dragustinovis, Garza etc Their parents worked hard to achieve this: let us not be jealous. Matamoros is not their place to prosper right now, so they are taking over Brownsville. They still have their culture and their connections but they need to make big money (most of them were born in the USA). It was just the opportunity they were waiting for: to be at the organizations that have power so that they can do their own deals. So now , Brownsville and Matamoros are connected by the new generation of the rich and famous. Before, Brownsville was not their goal but now it is: let us get used to this. Very interesting way of achieving all this: Beer Fest, Paella Fest, etc (the rich kids from Matamoros are behind all this)

Can someone help me with this?
These bad folks were born in Brownsville,
but from Matamoros. Right?

Is this cross river hatrid? Jealousy ?

I agree with you, but this people don't put a single penny from their pocket!
Arturo Trevino, Pedro Cardenas, Graciela Salazar, Eliseo Davila have NEVER payed for tickets, function tables etc, at the Mr Amigo events.
Their parents never worked hard, the exploided people working for them for penny's were the one working hard.
Arturo Trevino brother is an exconvict that just came out from jail last year for drug related charges, yes very convenient he has double citizenship so he stayed here
Wow very nice people this is the people taking over Brownsville.
